LET ME JUST TAKE A MOMENT TO SAY THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING HERE. WE HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY HERE IN NASHVILLE CLOSE TO 20 YEARS, 10 OF WHICH I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN. IT IS IN MY MIND A GREAT OCCASION WHERE PEOPLE COME TOGETHER OVER A DOCUMENT THAT’S ALMOST 70 YEARS OLD. THE U.N. HAS STARTED ITS YEARLONG CELEBRATION, HUMAN RIGHTS, MOVING TOWARD DECEMBER 11, 2018. IT WAS DECEMBER 10, RATHER, 1948. THESE NUMBERS GET YOU HERE. ESPECIALLY SINCE SOME OF US AS THE DOCUMENT ITSELF, OKAY? THE ONE THING I WANT TO SAY ABOUT THE DOCUMENT, WHO WOULD THINK THAT A DOCUMENT CLOSE TO 70 YEARS OLD WOULD BE THE BEACON THAT WE SHOULD FOLLOW? THIS DOCUMENT SAYS THAT WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE FREE FROM DISCRIMINATION, TO HAVE DECENT HOUSING, DECENT EDUCATION, TO HAVE GOOD HEALTH. ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK ABOUT, IT’S IN THIS DOCUMENT. IT’S REALLY A DOCUMENT THAT DOES TALK ABOUT, AS HUMAN BEINGS, WHAT WE ARE ALL ENTITLED TO. IT’S THE DOCUMENT THAT FRAMED THE RIGHTS FOR THE CIVIL LAWS WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY TODAY. I TELL PEOPLE, BACK TO THE FUTURE. IF WE LOOK AT THE DOCUMENT AND READ THE DOCUMENT AND UNDERSTOOD IT, WE WOULDN’T HAVE THE ISSUES WE HAVE TODAY. THE THEME IS INTERESTING AS WELL. I THINK SOMEONE WAS LOOKING INSIDE AMERICA. IT’S CALLED STAND UP FOR HUMAN RIGHTS. HASH TAG STANDS UP FOR HUMAN RIGHTS UNDERSCORES THE DIGNITY, FAIRNESS AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL PEOPLE. IT IS THE ONE THING IF WE AGREE ON, EVERY HUMAN BEING SHOULD BE FREE FROM DISCRIMINATION, SHOULD BE RESPECTED, AND SHOULD HAVE A PLACE AND A SPACE, WHATEVER IT LOOKS LIKE, THAT VALUES THEM AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS. THAT’S A SIGNIFICANT MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB SOME DAYS, BUT ENOUGH OF ME PONTIFICATING, ON TO THE CELEBRATION. THIS REALLY IS A CELEBRATION TONIGHT. IT’S A RECOGNITION OF THE DOCUMENT ITSELF, AND A CELEBRATION OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE ACTUALLY, ARE LIVING THIS DOCUMENT IN THEIR DAILY LIVES. WE ARE GOING TO DO THAT. I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF DOING THIS FOR A WHILE. LET ME THANK MY COLLEAGUES AND THOSE THAT HELPED TO PUT THIS TOGETHER. THE METRO HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION, TENNESSEE SEE UNITED FOR UNITED STATES, THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY AND THOSE AT THE TEN SIGH RIGHTS COMMISSION. WE HAVE A GREAT TIME PUTTING THIS TOGETHER ANNUALLY. I’M PLEASED TO INTRODUCE SOMEONE I WORK WITH, THE CHAIR OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION. ANNA HAS BEEN OUR CHAIR THREE YEARS NOW — TWO AND A HALF, GOING ON THREE. WE ARE PLEASED TO HAVE HER. SHE WAS A COMMISSIONER IN THE STATE OF KENTUCKY FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. I HAVE KNOWN HER MORE YEARS THAN WE CAN TALK ABOUT TONIGHT. SHE IS AN ADVOCATE FOR HUMAN RIGHT AND SHE IS IN TENNESSEE WORKING ON DISABILITY RIGHTS WORK SHE HAS DONE. PLEASE WELCOME HER TO THE PODIUM. [APPLAUSE ]>>THANK YOU. BEVERLY INDICATED THIS HAS GONE ON SEVEN YEARS. I’M GOING TO SAY, I WAS NOT HERE AT THE BEGINNING. I JOINED YOU FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS. THE STATE OF TENNESSEE PROCLAMATION BY THE GOVERNOR, WHEREAS THE UNITED STATES PLAYS A PIVOTAL ROLE IN PROTECTING HUMAN RIGHTS, AND WHEREAS, RESPECT FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS IS IMPORTANT IN FOSTERING HUMAN DIGNITY AND FREEDOM, AND WHEREAS THE STATE OF TENNESSEE AND THE TENNESSEE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION ARE PROUD OF THEIR COMMITMENT TO DP GUARANTEE CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL RESIDENTS AND NUMEROUS COMMUNITY, CIVIL, RELIGIOUS AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WORK TO ENSURE EQUAL RIGHTS AND PROTECTIONS FOR ALL INDIVIDUALS. THANK YOU.>>PLEASE MAKE WELCOME TO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION, MISS MELODY FOWLER GREEN.>>HI, EVERYONE. I WANT TO FIRST START BY TAKING THE OPPORTUNITY TO THANK OUR COSPONSORS FOR THIS EVENT. I HAVE TO TELL YOU, IT’S A REAL JOY PLANNING WITH THAT GROUP EVERY YEAR. I WANT TO THANK MY STAFF MEMBER, THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, BARBARA AT THE METRO MUSEUM RIGHTS COMMISSION. BARBARA TAKES ON THE BULK OF WORK FOR THE EVENT. WE WANT TO THANK YOU VERY MUCH, BARBARA. AND I WANT TO THANK YOU ALL. YOU HAVE BOTH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL OBLIGATIONS COMPETING FOR YOUR ATTENTION THIS TIME OF YEAR. WE ARE HONORED THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO SPEND YOUR EVENING WITH US TO TALK ABOUT CHALLENGES WE FACE, AND TO CELEBRATE THE FOLKS IN OUR TOMI BELIEVE IT’S E THESE CHALLENGES AS HUMAN RIGHTS CHALLENGES, NOT NECESSARILY TO BE SOLVED BY GOVERNMENT ALONE, BUT BY US AS A COMMUNITY. I HAVE REASON TO BE HOPEFUL. HERE IN NASHVILLE, WE MIGHT SPEAK OCCASIONALLY, PERHAPS, A LITTLE TOO POLITELY OVER OUR CONFLICT, BUT WE DO SPEAK ABOUT THEM. WE DO COMMIT TO WORKING ON THEM TOGETHER. I SINCERELY LOOK TO WORK ON THAT WORK WITH ALL OF YOU IN THE ROOM AND WITH ANOTHER FRIEND OF MINE, SOMEONE WHOM I TAKE A GREAT DEAL OF INSPIRATION FROM, MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE PHYLLIS, DIRECTOR OF CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND CURRENT CHAIR OF THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION.>>THANK YOU, MILL. I’M SITTING AND WALKING PEOPLE WALK IN, THE PERSON SITTING BEHIND ME, SITTING IN FRONT OF ME, IT’S IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT WHEN WE SPEAK ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS, WE ARE SO OFTEN SPEAKING ABOUT WOMEN. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE WOMEN THAT MAKE IT HAPPEN, THE WOMEN THAT HOLD UP HALF THE SKY. ON BEHALF OF THE WOMAN WHO LEADS THIS CITY, AND IN HONOR OF THE MOTHER WOMEN THAT SERVED THIS STATE IN PUBLIC OFTEN AND SISTER WOMEN WHO TILL THE SOIL, AND THE DAUGHTER WOMEN — I HAVE A STUDENT TO BE RECOGNIZED LATER. THERE ARE A LOT OF COUNTRIES IN AFRICA, ASIA, THINGS LIKE THAT, THAT DON’T HAVE THE RIGHTS. YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE EVERYONE AROUND THE WORLD, BUT IF I CONTINUE DOING WHAT I DO — IT STARTS FOR ME. IF I CAN CONTINUE HUMAN RIGHTS, PEOPLE CAN CONTINUE BALANCE OR UNDERSTAND MY PASSION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND RESPECT THAT AND CONTINUE IT THEMSELVES. [VIDEO ]>>FOR SOME REASON PEOPLE CONTINUE TO PERPETUATE EVIL AND PUT OTHERS DOWN TO MAKE OURSELVES FEEL SUPERIOR. WORKING FOR EQUAL RIGHTS IS A WAY TO COUNTER BALANCE THE EVIL WE SEE WITHIN PEOPLE. STARTING TO ADVOCATE FOR PEOPLE AND BRINGING PEOPLE TO A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD, RATHER THAN PUTTING THEM DOWN IS IMPORTANT TO ALLEVIATE W THE EVIL WE SEE N THE WORLD. IGNORANCE IS ONE OF THE WORST THINGS WE FACE. LEFT TO OUR OWN DEVICES, WE ACT IN WAYS THAT ARE ABSOLUTELY PRE-POSTRUSS. I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE KNOW THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS SO THEY RECOGNIZE HOW THEY SHOULD BEHAVE TOWARD OTHER PEOPLE. THEY DON’T HAVE A GUT INSTINCT OF THAT’S WRONG, BUT SOMETHING TELLS THEM, THIS IS WRONG. WE HAVE TO STAND UP AGAINST THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR. NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE AT, YOU CAN TAKE STEPS WITH A BROADER IMPACT THAN THE EXACT LOCATION YOU ARE IN. TENNESSEE AS A SOUTHERN STATE IS INCREDIBLY FAR REACHING IF NOTHING ELSE BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY THAT’S PLACED HERE. IF WE AS A STATE BEGIN STANDING UP FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, WE HAVE IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN THE STATE THAT HAVE A NATIONAL PLATFORM TO SPREAD THAT SAME PURPOSE AND MESSAGE. I PUT A LOT OF VALUE ON EDUCATION. FOR ME, I’M GOING TO CONTINUE MY EDUCATION. I WANT TO GET MY LAW DEGREE AND USE THE DEGREE FOR THE KNOWLEDGE LEARNING GIVES YOU TO ADVOCATE FOR PEOPLE THAT DON’T HAVE THE SAME SKILL SET. I WANT TO STAND UP FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT IN THE POSITION TO STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES. I WANT TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE LEARN TO STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES AND OTHERS AS WELL. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO PUT MYSELF IN A POSITION WHERE I HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO HELP PROPERLY, RATHER THAN JUST THE DESIRE TO HELP. I HAVE A WAY TO IMPLEMENT THAT HELP. ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS WE SHOULD BE PURSUING HUMAN RIGHTS, WE HAVE TO STAND UP FOR EACH OTHER IF WE WANT THE WORLD TO FUNCTION AT ALL. WE SEE THE CHAOS BROUGHT ON WHENEVER HUMAN RIGHTS ARE VIOLATED. WE SEE THE EMOTIONAL TOLL IT TAKES GLOBALLY, AND IN ORDER FOR OUR WORLD TO FUNCTION IN AN EFFECTIVE WAY, WE HAVE TO HELP EACH OTHER. WE HAVE TO STAND UP FOR EACH OTHER. IF YOU ARE PUT IN A POSITION WHERE YOU HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO HELP, YOU HAVE THE OBLIGATION TO HELP.>>THIS YEAR WE SAW THE LOSS OF TWO LEADERS THAT SPENT THEIR LIVES HONORING THOSE LESS FORTUNATE. HE WAS A CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER. HE WAS A GREAT FRIEND.>>HE WAS A BIG, SOFT, SOUTHERN TEDDY BEAR WITH A BIG GIANT HEART CALLED EVERYBODY, DARLING.>>ONE OF THE THINGS WE HAVE SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS IS FRANK LOVED. HE LOVED YOU NO MATTER WHO YOU WERE.>>IF YOU NEVER MET FRANK, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU WOULD NOTICE IS HIS GENUINE PERSONALITY ABOUT PAYING ATTENTION TO YOU AND WANTING TO KNOW ABOUT YOU, AND MAKING THAT CONNECTION. HE HAD A GIFT FOR MAKING EVERYONE FEEL WANTED AND APPRECIATED AND PART OF A TEAM. IT WAS, HE HAD A SPECIAL GIFT FOR THAT.>>HAD THIS THING I THINK PEOPLE WOULD OFTEN UNDERESTIMATE. HE HAD THIS STRENGTH. HE WOULDN’T COME OFF AS A TOUGH GUY, BUT HE WASN’T AFRAID OF A CHALLENGE. HE WASN’T AFRAID TO TELL THE TRUTH, EVEN WHEN TELLING THE TRUTH WAS HARD. HE WAS AN ACTIVIST OF THE UNDERDOG. EVENTED TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY WAS TAKEN CARE OF — EVERYBODY. HE DIDN’T CARE WHO. HE WANTED TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY KNEW THEY WERE LOVED AND EVERYBODY KNEW HE WAS THERE FOR THEM.>>FRANK ADVOCATED FOR PEOPLE, FOR HUMAN BEINGS. HE ADVOCATED MOST STRONGLY FOR PEOPLE WHO OTHERWISE MIGHT NOT HAVE A VOICE. HE LOVED HIS COMMUNITY. THIS IS HIS HOME PLACE. THIS IS WHERE HE WAS BORN, RAISED AND CAME BACK TO. HE WANTED EVERYONE TO KNOW WHAT A TREASURE WE HAD, WHAT A SECRET WE WERE. THE SECRET IS OUT NOW. EVERYONE WANTS TO BE PART OF US. HE WAS ABLE TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER THAT OTHERWISE MIGHT NOT WORK TOGETHER. HE COULD GET PEOPLE TO SEE THE BENEFIT OF JOINT ACTION OR DOING A PROJECT TOGETHER AND HE MADE IT FUN.>>THE FARMER’S MARKET WAS SOMETHING THAT CAME OUT OF A DISCUSSION ON GROUP.>>WE HADN’T BEEN IN MAYBE A YEAR AND WE ASKED WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT? A FARMER’S MARKET WAS THE RESOUNDING THING. I WISH SOMEBODY WOULD BUILD US A MARKET. FRANK SAID, HOW DO YOU BUILD A MARKET? WE FIGURED IT OUT. BETWEEN BRINGING BUSINESSES TO DONALDSON, GETTING FAC FACADES T ON OUR OLDER BUSINESSES, SAYING WE WANT YOU TO GO WITH US, GROW WITH US, COME WITH US. WITH METRO POLICE CHARITIES, HE WAS A DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THAT. EVERY YEAR WE DONATE TO THE COMMUNITY. FRANK CODIFIED THE IDEAS TOGETHER, GOT THE PEOPLE TOGETHER, PUT THE TEAM TOGETHER, AND MADE IT HAPPEN THAT IT’S BEEN ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THINGS EVER ON DONALDSON.>>FRANK REVITALIZED DONALD SAAB. HE WAS ONE OF THREE THAT STARTED IT. HE STOOD BEHIND IT AND PUT THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF WORK INTO IT.>>TO TAKE AN IDEA CONCEPTUALIZE IT, VISUALIZE IT AND IMPLEMENT IT, THAT WAS A HUGE STRENGTH OF FRANK’S.>>THANK WAS GREAT AT BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.>>WE HAD A YOUNG MAN NAMED DONE DONNY. IF YOU LIVED IN DONALDSON, YOU KNEW WHO HE WAS. HE WAS DISABLED.>>WHEN YOU ARE KICKED DOWN, YOU WANT FRANK TO HELP YOU GET BACK UP.>>DONNY WALKED THE STREETS AND COLLECTED ALUMINUM CANS FROM THE BUSINESSES. HE WOULD WALK IN AND SAY, I’M HERE FOR YOUR CANS. HE WOULD TAKE THE CANS. EVERYONE SAVED THEM. HE WOULD TAKE THEM HOME AND TO THE RECYCLING CENTER. THAT WAS HIS CONTRIBUTION TO HIS FAMILY.>>HE WOULD LAUGH WITH YOU, MAYBE LAUGH AT YOU, BUT HE ALWAYS GAVE YOU A HAND.>>FRANK TOOK HIM SO MANY PLACES. DONNY WENT THROUGH WALKING SHOES EVERY 30 DAYS. THEY WOULD GET IN THE CAR AND GO SHOPPING.>>HE WOULD BE SO HAPPY TO KNOW WHAT HE WAS ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH, HOW HE WAS ABLE TO INSPIRE PEOPLE TO GIVE BACK. HIS MEMORY WILL ALWAYS BE SUCH THAT IT INSPIRES PEOPLE TO WANT TO SERVE AND GIVE BACK. I THINK THAT WILL ALWAYS BE THERE.>>DONNY DREW ILL WITH CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE. THE COMMUNITY RALLIED AROUND HIM. THERE WAS NOTHING WE COULD DO. FRANK STOOD BESIDE HIM THE WHOLE TIME — UP UNTIL DONNY PASSED AND TOLD HIM, YOU ARE GOING TO BE FINE. WE KNOW WHAT’S ON THE OTHER SIDE. YOU ARE GOING TO BE FINE. ANYTIME DONNY WOULD BE SCARED, FRANK WOULD SAY, NO, DON’T BE SILLY. THERE’S NOTHING TO BE SCARED OF. WE GOT YOU. WE ARE HERE. YOUR FAMILY IS HERE. TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS. TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS. FRANK LOVED DONNY, I DON’T KNOW IF YOU WOULD SAY LIKE A BROTHER, LIKE A CHILD — MORE IMPORTANTLY, LIKE A FRIEND.>>I KNOW THAT THE COMMUNITY THAT HE BUILT IN DONALDSON WAS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO HIM.>>WHEN ANDREW FRANK AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT WHAT WAS NEXT FOR HIP DONALDSON, WE HAD AT THAT POINT A THOUSAND PEOPLE ON THE PAGE WHEN THE THREE OF US STARTED MEETING AND TALKING ABOUT THIS IS A FACEBOOK PAGE BUT IT’S MORE SPECIAL THAN A SOCIAL MEDIA PAGE. IT’S SOMETHING THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER. WE WOULD TALK ABOUT THAT IT NEEDS TO STAY THAT WAY. IT NEEDS TO STAY SIMPLE. WE DON’T WANT MUCH ADMINISTRATION TO IT. HERE WE ARE SEVEN YEARS NOW FROM WHEN IT FIRST STARTED. WE WOULD LOOK BACK AND JOKE ABOUT THAT CONVERSATION, IT NEEDS TO BE SIMPLE, BUT IT NEEDED ADMINISTRATION, 501C ALL OF THAT TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. WE ALWAYS LOOK BACK ON THAT AND SAID, WHAT WERE WE THINKING? IT NEEDED TO BE SOMETHING MUCH MORE. THAT WAS ALWAYS FUNNY. FRANK HAD “FRANK FR PHRASES” HE LIKED TO SAY, LIKE LOVE YOU MORE THAN MY LUGGAGE WAS, KISS MY BUTT. IF HE DID SOMETHING HE KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO BE SASSY ABOUT, IT WOULD BE LOVE YOU MORE THAN MY HE WOULD SEND ME A PICTURE OF A BIRD ATTACKING A HUMAN AND FOLLOW IT UP WITH, LOVE YOU MORE THAN MY LUGGAGE.>>THANK AND I HAD NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE. WE HAD FOOD TRUCKS AND WE HAD A COUPLE OF SPEAKERS AND WHAT NOT. WE PRESENTED THAT THE FIRST TIME WHEN WE RAISED MONEY THROUGH TEE SHIRT SALES AND GAVE BACK TO 50 FORWARD. THERE IS A PICTURE OF US LOOKING LIKE WHICH WAY DID WE GO? I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING.>>HE WOULD WANT YOU TO DO SOMETHING. HE DOESN’T WANT YOU TO SIT IN YOUR CHAIR AND THINK, OH THE INJUSTICE OF IT ALL. HE WANTS YOU TO BE A FIXER. HE WANTS YOU TO SEE THE PROBLEM AND GO ON. HE WANTS YOU TO GO FORTH, GO DO. FRANK WAS A DOER. THAT’S WHAT HE WOULD WANT. HE WAS A FIERCE SUPPORTER OF THE COMMISSION’S WORK AND OUR MISSION. HE WOULD WANT TO BE REMEMBERED AS THE CHAMPION OF THE UNDERDOG AND THE UNDERSERVED. FRANK WOULD WANT TO BE REMEMBERED FOR WHAT WE WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH ON THE COMMUNITY.>>WE HAVE A FOOD PANTRY THAT SERVES OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS UNDER SERVED CHILDREN IN HIS HONOR. HE SAW A NEED. INSTEAD OF SAYING, I WISH I COULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT, HE WOULD SAY, HERE’S HOW I’M GOING TO START. EVERYONE JUMPED ONBOARD. NOW IT’S A BIG PANTRY. TWO RIVERS SERVES ALL OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.>>I WANT TO TELL FRANK THANK YOU. HE HELD MY HAND WHEN I WENT THROUGH HARD TIMES PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY. IT WAS A REAL COMFORT. HE WAS REALLY GENUINE IN HIS COMFORT. I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU.>>HE SETS THE BAR FOR SERVICE TO COMMUNITY. [APPLAUSE ]>>PLEASE WELCOME TO THE WINNER OF THE RISING ADVOCATE AWARD, MR. JUSTIN JONES. [APPLAUSE ]>>ALL RIGHT. GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS JUSTIN JONES. I’M HONORED TO BE HERE FOR THE HUMAN RIGHTS DAY HERE WITH OTHER STUDENTS. WE KNOW WHERE OUR POLITICAL LEADERS DROPPED THE BALL, WE SEE A NEW GENERATION PICKING UP THE LOAD. WE WANT TO FOCUS ON THE RIGHT TO FREE EXPRESSION. YOU HAVE TO DRAW A LINE SOMEWHERE. THIS YEAR WE HAD TO DRAW MANY LINES IN TERMS OF HUMAN RIGHTS. I WANT TO GIVE YOU A WELCOME FOR BEING HERE AND DOING WHAT YOU DO. WE HAVE 15 MINUTES, SO I WANT TO JUMP INTO THE QUESTIONS. THE FIRST QUESTION, MY BROTHER TRE WHO WORKS WITH ART, IN WHAT WAY DO YOU THINK ART HAS BEEN INFLEW ENSHALL IN TERMS OF BEING SYMBOLS OF THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT WE HAVE SEEN IN THIS PAST YEAR IN PARTICULAR?>>CERTAINLY. GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. MOHAMMED DOES A LOT FOR OUR TEAM.>>FELLOW 2016 AWARD EE. WE HAVE TO SHOUT HIM OUT. IT’S SO MANY LEVELS. IT STARTS IN CLASSROOMS WHEN KIDS GET ASSIGNMENTS AND THEY ARE ASKED TO CREATE. THEY CREATE WHATEVER THEY ARE SEEING OR FEELING. IT COMES OUT ON WHATEVER IT IS THAT THEY PUT THEIR HEART INTO. YOU DEVELOP AS AN ARTIST AND BECOME A PROMINENT ARTIST. YOU HAVE PROBABLY SEEN MURALS ALL OVER TOWN RESPONDING TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING. ON A NATIONAL SCALE, YOU HAVE ARTISTS LIKE THE GOOD NEIGHBORS GOOD FENCES — I FORGET THE EXACT TITLE. IT’S A PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION IN NEW YORK THAT TALKS ABOUT THE GLOBAL MIGRATION CRISIS. IT’S AT ALL LEVELS. EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK, THERE IS EXPRESSION THROUGH ART, PEOPLE RESISTING AND GIVING THEIR OPINION AND FEELINGS AND SHARING THAT AND ALLOWING OTHERS TO FEEL THOSE THINGS AS WELL. THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS ART CAN BE EXPRESSED.>>AWESOME. YOU ARE GETTING INTO THE LEGAL AREA. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU WANT TO CHIME IN ON WAYS YOU HAVE SEEN ART GIVE EXPRESSION OR BECOME A SYMBOL OF THE RESISTANCE MOVEMENT?>>ABSOLUTELY. IT’S A HUGE ASPECT OF 2017. A LOT OF ART HAS BEEN MADE SPECIFICALLY IN PROTEST MOVEMENTS. THERE HAVE BEEN BANNERS MADE BY PEOPLE THAT MAY NOT FEEL SAFE AT PROTEST RALLIES, STANDING UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS CAN BE NERVE WRACKING. ART IS SO IMPORTANT. BEING ABLE TO SHOWCASE THE ART% WITHOUT PUTTING YOUR BODY ON THE LINE IS IMPORTANT IN HUMAN RIGHTS AS WELL. THE FLAG THAT HELPED MIGRATE REFUGEES FOR THOSE THAT DON’T FEEL THEY HAVE A HOME ANYMORE. THAT STOOD OUT TO ME LOOKING BACK ON THE YEAR. YOU CAN EXPRESS IT IN A WAY YOU WOULDN’T HAVE DEPICTED IT. IT’S A WAY TO SHOW THE CREATIVE SIDE, WHAT WE CAN’T EXPRESS IN WORDS.>>WE TALKED ABOUT VISUAL ARTS BUT I WANT TO LIFT UP THE VOCAL ARTS AS WELL. I DON’T THINK YOU CAN GO FORWARD WITHOUT PROTESTS, THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE. WE HAVE THE VISUAL ARTS THAT GIVE WAY TO THE MOVEMENTS. WE HAVE MILLENNIALS HERE. I THINK IT’S THE BEST GENERATION BECAUSE I’M PART OF THE GENERATION. WHAT ROLE, AND THIS IS FOR ANYONE. I’LL START WITH CAMILLA WITH THE UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION. WHAT ROLE DO YOU SEE THE UNITED NATIONS SEE AS LEADERS OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS STRUGGLES? WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU THINK THEY HAVE TO OFFER.>>THE FIRST THING I WANT TO SAY IS DOING THIS WORK IS NOT ALWAYS SAFE. IF YOU ARE A PERSON BORN INTO A FAMILY THAT HAS A COMFORTABLE POSITION, NOT EVEN IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF MONEY, BUT IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO FUNCTION AND FEEL SAFE AS A PERSON IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY, YOU ARE THE PERSON THAT NEEDS TO STAND UP FOR THOSE THAT DON’T FEEL SAFE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO PROTESTING PHYSICAL FORM. IN GENERAL, IN ACTIVIST MOVEMENTS YOU ARE NOT ALWAYS SAFE. THERE IS RACISM WITHIN THE MOVEMENTS. IT’S NOT ALWAYS AS VIOLENT OR AGGRESSIVE AS OTHER THINGS THAT CAN BE THAT ARE NOT WITHIN THE EVENT BUT IT STILL EXISTS. YOU HAVE TO KEEP THAT IN MIND. THERE ARE ACTIVISTS IN HISTORY WE HAVE TO LOC LOOK BACK ON, THS ONE OF THE LESSONS, WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THROUGH AND HOW IT FORMS THE WORK YOU ARE DOING. IT’S IMPORTANT TO STAND BEHIND PEOPLE AND ASK PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN SUB SUBJUGATED. ARE YOU GOOD AT MAKING ART? DO YOU LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN LAW? DO YOU WANT TO MAKE LEGISLATION? THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS YOU CAN HELP. YOU HAVE TO FIND YOUR WAY TO DO WHAT YOU DO WITH EFFICACY AND PASSION.>>I THINK BEING A MILLENNIAL IS A GREAT ADVANTAGE FOR ADEQUACY AS A WHOLE. WE HAVE MADE THE WORLD SMALLER WITH ACCESS TO INFORMATION. I FEEL IT’S EASIER. WE SHOULD BE USING THAT AS AN ADVANTAGE TO HELP THE PEOPLE THAT ARE SUBJUGATED TO THESE THINGS. I FEEL LIKE TODAY’S PROBLEMS AND YESTERDAY’S SOLUTIONS DON’T MATCH. I FEEL LIKE TODAY’S MILLENNIALS ARE COMING UP WITH CREATIVE WAYS. I FEEL LIKE OPEN LINES OF COMMUNICATION ARE HELPING. THAT’S THE WAY TO MOVE FORWARD. YOU WANT TO MAKE AWARENESS BETWEEN THINGS YOU KNOW AND OTHERS KNOW. YOU NEED A CASCADE OF EVENTS YOU RAISE AWARENESS. PEOPLE WILL ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES AND FOR OTHERS.>>CAN I ADD SOMETHING TO THAT QUESTION? SOMETHING UNIQUE IN OUR GENERATION IS SOCIAL MEDIA. IN ADDITION TO THAT QUESTION, DO YOU FEEL IT’S BEEN A BENEFIT OR SOMETHING THAT GIVES PEOPLE AN EASY OUT IN TERMS OF HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVISM?>>DEFINITELY. CHCAMILLA SAID WE HAVE A NICHE O PICK OUT. THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA, EVERYTHING IS ACCESSIBLE LIKE THAT. WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS, EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT IT INSTANTLY. IT’S A POSITIVE TO STAY INFORMED ABOUT THESE THINGS. YOU GET SIDETRACKED AND DISTRACTED. SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TO LEARN FROM THE GENERATIONS BEFORE US, THEY HAVE HAD TO FIGHT THE FIGHT IN A DIFFERENT WAY. IT WAS MORE PHYSICAL, I GUESS, AND MORE BOOTS ON THE GROUND. UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE ACTIONS HAPPEN. END OF THE DAY, YOU TWEET SOMETHING POWERFUL ONE MINUTE AND TWEET A MUSIC VIDEO NEXT MINUTE. IT’S MAKING SURE YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA BUT STAYING FOCUSED ON ACTION AS WELL.>>I GUESS WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES USING TWITTER AND SOCIAL MEDIA.>>WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO OUR GENERATION? WE HAVE SEEN CHILDREN SLAVERY IN LIBYA, WOMEN’S RIGHTS VIOLATED, PEOPLE IN THE STREET SAYING WHY ARE WE BUILDING WALLS INSTEAD OF BRIDGES? WITH THE CRISIS, IT SEEMS WE HAVE BEEN ON EDGE WHEN WE WAKE UP. WHAT DO YOU PERSONALLY SEE AS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO HUMAN RIGHTS THIS GENERATION?>>I FEEL LIKE FOR TODAY OR THE TIMES WE ARE IN NOW, IGNORANCE AND SILENCE ARE THE TWO BIGGEST THREATS WE WORK WITH. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DEALING WITH FOR THE IMMIGRATION CRISIS AND DACA CRISIS. PEOPLE ARE AFRAID BECAUSE THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON. THEY CHOOSE TO IGNORE IT INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT IT OR LEARNING ABOUT IT. I FEEL LIKE ARE OTHERS THAT HAVE A VOICE BUT ARE SCARED. THEY ARE SCARED OF THE ADEQUACY WORLD, WRIED HOW THEY’LL BE PERCEIVED BY THEIR FAMILY BECAUSE THEIR FAMILY HAS A DIFFERENT TAKE ON IT. I FEEL LIKE IGNORANCE AND SILENCE ARE THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WE HAVE TODAY. IF WE CAN OVERCOME THAT, I FEEL WE CAN MOVE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.>>IGNORANCE AND SILENCE. HOW ABOUT YOU, TRE?>>I AGREE WITH THAT. I WOULD SAY MISINFORMATION AND BEING UNINFORMED ABOUT THINGS, THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS WE THINK IN THE UNITED STATES THAT’S THROWN INTO OUR FACE EVERYDAY. EVERY TIME YOU GO ON TO A WEBSITE, WE HEAR BREAKING NEWS. WE FORGET OR DON’T HEAR ABOUT THINGS GOING ON OUTSIDE OF OUR NATION AND KIND OF BEING MISINFORMED ABOUT STUFF GOING ON, NOT UNDERSTANDING. IT’S HARD TO FIND THE ACCURATE INFORMATION AT TIMES. I THINK THAT’S THE THREAT, THAT THERE IS SO MUCH. WITH SOCIAL MEDIA AND INFORMATION BEING SO FREELY DISTRIBUTED, IT’S HARD TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING THE INFORMAION THAT’S CORRECT. WHEN YOU NEED TO MAKE CLANG, YOU CHANGE THE RIGHT THINGS.>>WHEN YOU SEE AGENCIES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO STAND UP FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, BASICALLY DOING THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT HUMAN RIGHTS ARE, THAT REVERBERATES AROUND THE GLOBE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA, AND SECOND, INACTION. IT’S REALLY HARD, SOMETIMES, TRAUMATIC, ESPECIALLY IF YOU GROW UP IN THE U.S. OR OTHER FIRST WORLD COUNTRY AND YOU SEE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATED IN FRONT OF YOU OVER AND OVER AGAIN, IT CAN TAKE A TOLL ON YOU MENTALLY. IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE MONEY OR ACCESS, TO HELP YOURSELF, HEAL YOURSELF, I WOULD AGREE WITH THAT AS WELL. COMING TO A CLOSE HERE, FREEDOM, HUMAN RIGHTS, JUSTICE, YOU HAVE TO STRUGGLE FOR THEM IN EACH GENERATION. IN OUR GENERATION, WHAT IS HOPE YOU CAN OFFER? WHAT IS HOPE FOR THE YEARS AHEAD? WHAT ARE WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN DOING? WHAT ARE WAYS TO SEE HOPE RISING IN THE FORM OF RESISTANCE, BREATHING LIFE INTO THESE THINGS THAT WE DON’T HAVE A CHOICE BUT TO GET INVOLVED IN TODAY?>>WHAT GIVES ME HOPE IS THE OPPORTUNITY I HAVE RIGHT NOW KNOWING THAT PEOPLE BEFORE ME DIDN’T HAVE. PEOPLE BEFORE THEM DIDN’T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY. WE HAVE TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD. I KNOW THAT’S HARD TO SAY ON A DAILY BASIS WITH SO MUCH THAT SEEMS TO BE GOING BACKWARDS. WE HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO LEAD OUR NEXT GENERATION IN SOMETHING BETTER, SOMETHING WITH MORE OPPORTUNITY THAN WE HAVE RIGHT NOW.>>WE NEED TO LEARN FROM PAST GENERATIONS. WE CAN COME UP WITH DIFFERENT IDEAS TO WORK ON TODAY’S GENERATION. THE WAY THEY PASS DOWN THEIR WISDOM, I FEEL LIKE THE RISING ADVOCATES WE HAVE TODAY CONTINUE TO INSPIRE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY. THEIR WORK HAVING SIGNIFICANT IMPACT GIVES HOPE TO OTHERS. I FEEL THAT’S IMPORTANT. SOMETHING I SAY TO KIDS INTERESTED IN JOINING, WE WANT TO WORK ON THIS LOCALLY BUT INSPIRE GLOBALLY. I DIDN’T COME UP WITH THIS IDEA, BUT I REALLY, REALLY LIKE IT. THERE ARE SO MANY, BEAUTIFUL, WONDERFUL, EFFICIENT GRASS ROOT ORGANIZATIONS IN NASHVILLE WORKING TO CREATE MORE OF THE ACCESS TO CREATE MORE PUBLIC HOUSING. THEY ARE WORKING FOR THEMSELVES. THEY ARE CITIZENS. IT’S BEAUTIFUL AND THERE ARE LOCAL GARDENING MOVEMENTS. THAT’S WHAT I DO AT BELMONT. THE LOCAL MOVEMENTS ARE REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT’S CLOSE TO YOU. YOU HAVE ACCESS TO IT. YOU CAN APPROACH THIS. ITEM NOT SOMETHING UP IN THE AIR. IT’S NOT A GIANT ORGANIZATION, BUT YOU CAN USE THE PLATFORM OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO SAY TO PEOPLE NOWHERE NEAR CLOSE TO YOU, I’M DOING THIS AT HOME. YOU CAN DO IT IN YOUR HOME. YOU CAN SPREAD IT AROUND.>>YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING. I HOPE SOMEONE HERE FOUND A LITTLE BIT OF HOPE. HOPE IS THE SPIRITUAL ARMOR WE PUT ON. PLEASE COMMEND THE MILLENNIALS UP HERE. [APPLAUSE ]>>THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY. I KNOW THAT MY HUSBAND WOULD BE GLAD AS WELL. WE LIVE IN A WORLD STRUGGLING WITH THE TRIPLE EVIL OF RACISM, WAR AND POVERTY. IT’S TIME THAT WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NOW. I THINK THAT THE ATTITUDE THE POLICE AND PRESS AGAINST MY HUSBAND, THE ACCUSATIONS AGAINST HIM WERE DOWN RIGHT FALSE. , AND SOMETIMES DISRESPECTFUL. I DIDN’T DO IT BECAUSE I WANTED TO. I DID IT BECAUSE I HAD TO. CORETTA, I HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOU ON T.V. LATELY, ADMIRING YOU, REALLY. PEOPLE LOVE YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND.>>YOUR HUSBAND TAUGHT US THAT THE WORLD COULD BE BEAUTIFUL AND STRONG. SOMETIMES THEY DON’T WANT TO SHARE THE TRUTH. SO MUCH WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM US AND OUR KIDS. NOW LISTEN, THEY MAY HAVE KILLED OUR HUSBANDS, BUT THEY DID NOT KILL THEIR IDEAS. I DIDN’T DO IT BECAUSE I WANTED TO. I DID IT BECAUSE I HAD TO. LEADERS. ACTIVISTS, MOTHERS.>>MINORITIES. THESE ARE THINGS THAT COME TO MIND W WHEN WE HEAR FROM CORETTA SCOTT KING AND THE WORK FROM THEIR HUSBANDS. BETTY SHA REZ AND CORETTA SCOTT KING ARE TWO ACTIVISTS FROM HISTORY.>>WE’LL NEVER KNOW WHAT BETTY AND CORETTA COULD HAVE BEEN BECAUSE THEY WERE FORCED TO GIVE UP THEIR DREAMS TO TAKE ON THEIR HUSBAND’S LEGACIES. WITH THE POETRY, MONIQUE CONSTANCE AND SCENES FROM MALCOLM EX-AND BETTY AND CORETTA, A PROGRAM.>>IF THESE TWO WOMEN STOOD ON THEIR ON TWO FEET, IS IT POSSIBLE THEY COULD HAVE DREAMED A BETTER DREAM?>>I WAS BORN APRIL 27, 1957 IN ALABAMA. I LIKE TO PLAY THE VIOLIN. LORD, I COULD SING. I HAD DREAMS, GOALS — YOU KNOW WHAT’S CRAZY HOW YOUR LIFE CAN CHANGE. YOU END UP IN A DIFFERENT PLACE. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED.>>I GREW UP IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN, THE ONLY CHILD OF MY ADOPTED PARENTS. IT WAS A SHELTERED UPBRINGING. WHEN IT CAME TIME, I WENT TO SCHOOL AND GOT MY NURSING DEGREE. I WAS AN AMBITIOUS YOUNG WOMAN. SINCE I WAS A GIRL, I WANTED TO BE A LEADER AND CHANGE LIVES. HONEY, IT WAS A TIME IN NEW YORK THAT BEING A YOUNG MOTHER TO SPEAK, I WOULD HAVE STOOD WITH MALCOLM X.>>YOU DON’T KNOW ME FOR MY MUSICAL ABILITIES, BUT I STOOD BY THAT MAN. WHEN CALLED ON, I STOOD THE TEST OF TIMES.>>HELLO?>>HELLO, BETTY?>>YES?>>THIS IS M MALCOLM. LISTEN, WILL YOU MARRY ME?>>YES.>>I DON’T THINK YOU HEARD WHAT I SAID?>>NOR DID YOU HEAR MY ANSWER.>>I LOVE YOU, BETTY.>>I LOVE YOU TOO, MALCOLM. A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE. HARD TO GET OUT OF CONCRETE, HE CAN’T SLEEP AT NIGHT. VISIONS SEEING HIMSELF IN A MORGUE SO EVERYDAY HE PREPARES FOR BATTLE. SAYS HE WANTS TO PUT A BABY IN ME BUT FEARS IT WON’T LAST LONG WHERE HE’S FROM. THERE’S A WAR. AIN’T THAT SOMETHING.>>I HEARD YOUR PLANS IN CONGRESS.>>THOSE FOLKS DOWN THERE SHOOTING IT DOWN SAME WAY AS 18 YEARS AGO.>>IT’S LIKE MALCOLM SAYS, SITTING AT THE TABLE, IT AIN’T MAKING THE DINNER, IT’S WHAT YOU HAVE ON YOUR PLATE. OUT OF ALL OF MY CHILDREN, SHE WAS AFFECTED BY MALCOLM’S DEATH THE MOST.>>THAT’S SOMETHING I CAN UNDERSTAND.>>I DON’T THINK IT WILL HELP. CORETTA, WHEN MALCOLM DIED, I WAS LOST. I WAS AT THE PLACE HE WAS SHOT DEAD WITH THE LITTLE ONES AT MY SIDE. I WAS AMAZED ABOUT THE DECISION I COULD HAVE MADE. NOW YOU LISTEN. THERE WAS SOMETHING I HAD TO DO. I DIDN’T HAVE A CHOICE. I DIDN’T DO IT BECAUSE I WANTED TO. I DID IT BECAUSE I HAD TO. HAVE YOU EVER LOVED A MAN THINKING THE DEVIL WAS CHASING HIM? HAVE HIM WEEP BETWEEN YOUR BREASTS? I HAVE. WE’LL RISE FROM THE ASHES. WE SIT HERE AND BREAK OUR BONES FOR YOU. WE BEAT OUR CHESTS AND WEEP FOR YOU.>>WHEN MY HUSBAND, MALCOLM X WAS SHOT DOWN IN MANHATTAN, I WAS THE MOTHER OF FOUR LITTLE GIRLS.>>I WATCHED AS THE GUNSHOTS HIT HIS CHEST AND I KNEW HE WOULD BE GONE FROM ME. THEY KILLED MALCOLM. I FELT I HAD LOST A PART OF MYSELF. A MAN GOD PUT ON THE EARTH TO DEFEND US ALL.>>MY LIFE CHANGED FOREVER. NOT ONLY DID I HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY, I HAD TO KEEP HIS DREAM ALIVE. HONEY, I DIDN’T DO IT BECAUSE I WANTED TO. I DID IT BECAUSE I HAD TO. IT WAS NOW MY RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THE WORLD KNEW HIS DREAM. MOTHERS ON BEHALF OF OUR FATHER’S BROWN SUGAR, THANK YOU. THE SEED HAS BEEN PLANTED AND YOUR LOVE IS ON OUR UNDYING FATHERS, ALWAYS PRESENT SPIRITUALLY. YOU HAVE WON. DON’T WORK TOO HARD. YOU DON’T HAVE TO STAY SO BUSY. WE’LL BE HERE. ALWAYS LOVING YOU, FOREVER YOURS, YOUR CHILDREN. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE ] JASMINE BOLDEN AND ZARIA HU HUBBARD.>>OUR NEXT AWARD IS FOR A MAN DEDICATED TO ENDING HUMAN TRAFFICKING. PLEASE ENJOY THE VIDEO OF MR. JERRY REDMAN.>>I RECOGNIZED EARLY ON IN MY LIFE THAT THERE WAS A STRONG SENSE OF EQUITY, FAIRNESS, EVEN BEFORE I KNEW WHAT THE WORD JUSTICE MEANS. I COULDN’T STAND SEEING PEOPLE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. I COULDN’T STAND SEEING PEOPLE LEFT OUT AND LEFT BEHIND. QUITE FRANKLY, I RECOGNIZE AS I WAS GROWING UP INTO EARLY ADULTHOOD, I WAS FAIRLY PRIVILEGED. I DIDN’T GET LEFT OUT OR LEFT BEHIND. IT WAS SOMETHING INNATE IN ME, I NOTICED THOSE THAT WERE. IF SOMEONE SEES A PROBLEM, WHAT MAKES THAT A PROBLEM TO YOU? PUT SCALE TO IT. PUT LANGUAGE TO IT. IF YOU IDENTIFY A PROBLEM OF HOMELESSNESS IN YOUR COMMUNITY, WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND THE ISSUE OF HOMELESSNESS? AT LEAST SOMETHING IS GOING ON. THERE IS AN AGENCY OR AGENCIES DEVOTED TO THAT. JOIN THEM IN THEIR WORK. WE HAVE THE WHEELS INVENTED. WE DON’T NEED MORE, BUT WE NEED MORE HANDS. WE NEED MORE MINDS. WE NEED MORE RESOURCES, FINANCIALLY AND OTHERWISE. THERE ARE PLENTY OF AGENCIES IN PLACE. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE. EVERYBODY IS PART OF THE SOLUTION NO MATTER WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT, POVERTY, HOMELESSNESS, HUMAN TRAFFICKING. EVERYONE HAS A ROLE THEY CAN PLAY IN THE ISSUES. WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE KNOW WHAT THE ISSUES ARE, WHAT THE CAUSES ARE, AND HOW DO I AS A CITIZEN CONTRIBUTE TO ENSURING AT SOME POINT WE ARE NOT HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUES. YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD. IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE THAT, THEN YOU DON’T BELIEVE ANYTHING. I WOULD ARGUE THAT MOST FOLKS DON’T KNOW THAT THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS EXISTS IN THE FIRST PLACE. AS IS THE CASE WITH EVERYTHING, AWARENESS AND EDUCATION BEGINS EVERYTHING. YOU CAN MEASURE HOW MUCH IMPACT YOU MAKE IN YOUR COMMUNITY IN TERMS OF TOUCHING THEM WITH THE MESSAGE ABOUT WHY THE DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS EXISTS, WHAT MAKES THEM UP, AND WHAT IMPACT DOES IT HAVE ON ME AS A CITIZEN, NOT JUST FROM A RESPONSIBILITY STANDPOINT, BUT HOW DO I BENEFIT FROM THIS? WE CAN BECOME EXHAUSTED. AWARENESS IS NOT NECESSARILY SEXY, BUT IT’S A STARTING POINT FOR ANYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. THIS IS A GREAT HONOR AND PRIVILEGE. I APPRECIATE IT. I’M HUMBLED. THERE IS A TEAM THAT WORKS WITH ME EVERYDAY TO DO WHAT WE DO. I KNOW IT’S AN OLD CLICHE AND WHAT NOT. I’M ACCEPTING THIS ON BEHALF OF THEM AND NOT JUST MYSELF. I’M VERY APPRECIATIVE. [APPLAUSE ]>>OUR NEXT AWARD FOR A VOICE FOR WOMEN, MUSLIMS, IMMIGRANTS AND ALL RESIDENTS OF TENNESSEE. PLEASE ENJOY THE VIDEO OF 2017 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD WINNER.>>THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS. THE FIRST IS MY RELIGION, MY FAITH. THERE IS A VERSE IN THE KORAN THAT TELLS US TO STAND UP FOR JUSTICE EVEN AGAINST OURSELVES. THAT’S PART OF HOW WE STARTED. WE HAVE THE TRADITION WHERE THE PROPHET DID. THE BIG THING IS MY FAITH. IT’S A FORM OF WORSHIP FOR ME. IT’S A WAY TO SERVE OTHERS. THE SECOND THING IS MY PARENTS. I GREW UP, ESPECIALLY MY DAD WITH ALL OF THIS OVER TIME. IT’S SOMETHING THAT I GREW UP WITH. AS I GOT OLDER, THE MORE YOU DO FOR OTHERS, THE MORE YOU DO FOR YOURSELF. THE FACT THAT YOU HELPED SOMEONE IS A GOOD FEELING. IT’S CHANGING YOURSELF. WHEN YOU DOING RIGHT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO AND YOU DO IT YOURSELF, PEOPLE SEE WHAT YOU DO, NOT NECESSARILY WHAT YOU SAY, BUT WHAT YOU DO. THE MORE PEOPLE LOOK AT WHAT OTHERS DO, THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE. ONCE WE DO THAT, WE COME TOGETHER COLLECTIVELY. OUR ISSUES ARE SIMILAR. WE MAY HAVE DIFFERENCES, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS. PEOPLE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND, AT LEAST FOR ME, WE ARE MORE THAN ONE ISSUE. I’M A MUSLIM. I’M BLACK. I’M A WOMAN. I GO EVERYWHERE. WHEN HER TALKING ABOUT BLACKS, IT IMPACTS ME, TALK ABOUT IMMIGRANT, IT IMPACTS ME. I’M A WOMAN. IT IMPACTS ME. TAKING AWAY SOMEONE’S RIGHT UNDERMINES THE PERSON. YOU ARE SAYING THE PERSON IS LESS THAN A PERSON. KNOWING THAT THOSE RIGHTS EXIST, AND HONORING THOSE RIGHTS, AND KNOWING THAT, BECAUSE THINK ABOUT IT, YOU DON’T WANT SOMEONE TO TRAMPLE YOUR RIGHTS. OFTEN TIMES, THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS. PEOPLE WANT TO STATE THEIR OWN RIGHTS AND CLAIM THEIR RIGHTS, BUT THEY DON’T THINK OTHERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO SO. KNOWING THAT WHAT APPLIES TO YOU APPLIES TO EVERYONE ELSE. IT’S WHAT MAKES PEOPLE GREAT. YOU HAVE THE FREEDOM TO DO SOMETHING. SO DOES THE OTHER PERSON. YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY, BUT THEY CAN SAY WHAT THEY WANT TO SAY TOO. THAT’S THE LAW OF THE LAND. THAT WILL ALLOW EACH OTHER TO HAVE SPACE. WE DON’T HAVE TO AGREE, BUT LET EVERYONE HAVE THEIR SAY. YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. EVERY LEADER FROM YOUR HOUSE TO NATIONAL TO STATE TO THE WORLD. I THINK NOT DOING ANYTHING IS THE WORST THING. WHATEVER YOU CAN DO, DO IT. [APPLAUSE ]>>WE ARE HONORED THIS YEAR TO RECOGNIZE THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN TO ENTER THE TENNESSEE SENATE. ENJOY THE VIDEO OF LIFETIME AWARD WINNER MISS THELMA HARPER.>>[VIDEO ]>>WE KNOW PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING. IT’S OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TRY TO HELP PEOPLE. THAT’S WHAT WE DO. THAT’S WHAT WE ENJOY. THIS IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY JUST TO THINK ABOUT, YOU HAVE GIVEN US THE OPPORTUNITY TO THINK ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WORLD. WE ARE LOOKING AT WHAT’S RIGHT HERE IN THE UNITED STATES. THEN WE LOOK AT WHAT’S GOING ON IN TENNESSEE. PARTICULARLY, HERE IN NASHVILLE. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF YOU KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG, CHANGE IT. IF IT’S BETTER, MAKE IT BETTER. DO MORE. PART OF IT IS, YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON. IT’S DIFFICULT IF WE CAN’T TELL ANYONE ELSE IF WE DON’T REALIZE WHAT IS GOING ON. IT HEENES WE HAVE TO BE AROUND IN NASHVILLE TENNESSEE. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN NASHVILLE. WHEN SOMEONE HONORS YOU, YOU WONDER WHY. FOR ME, THIS IS AWESOME. THANK YOU FOR HONORING ME. THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE ]>>OUR FINAL AWARD OF THE EVENING GOES TO A MAN WHO LEFT MILITARY SERVICE TO EMBARK UPON SERVING PEACE FOR MANKIND. ENJOY THE 2017 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER MR. JOEY KING. [VIDEO ]>>IT FEELS GOOD HELPING OTHER PEOPLE, I THINK. THE MORE YOU DO, THE MORE YOU FEEL BETTER. IT TAKES ONE STEP AT A TIME. CONVERTING PEOPLE TO MAKE CHANGE BECOMES THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD. YOU DO IT ONE DAY AT A TIME, ONE PERSON AT A TIME. THE DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IS AN IMPORTANT DOCUMENT, I CONSIDER MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE BILL OF RIGHTS. IT’S A TREATY OBLIGATION GATION. I THINK WE COULD TEACH IT IN SCHOOLS AND IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR CHILDREN TO KNOW IT. ONCE THE CHILDREN KNOW IT, IT WOULD PASS UP TO THE OLDER GENERATION. JOIN THE GROUP THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. IF YOU DON’T FEEL PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CHANGE, YOU WILL NEVER BE SUCCESSFUL. I HOPE TO HAVE PEACE AROUND THE WORLD SOMEDAY. [APPLAUSE ]>>HOW ABOUT THIS FOR AN EVENING? LET’S GIVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO OUR AWARD EES AGAIN. THANK YOU FOR THE RISING VOICES WE HAVE HAD. WE NORMALLY HAVE PEOPLE FROM A VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES. THIS YEAR THEY ARE MILLENNIALS, BUT THEIR VOICES ARE LOUD AS WE HAVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME. THIS IS A WONDERFUL EVENING. TO MY FRIEND SENATOR HARPER, IT IS WELL DESERVED. IT IS IMPORTANT TO VETERANS, AND ALL OF YOU H WHERE’S JERRY? HE’S BEEN ON THE CASE FOR A WHILE. HE’S REBRANDED, SECOND LIFE TENNESSEE. HE’S REBRANDED A COUPLE OF TIMES. WE NEED THAT HAPPENING BY ALL OF YOU. EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, IF WE DON’T REBRAND, SEE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE, SHAME ON US. WE CAN’T SIT BACK AND WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE. TO MY FRIEND JUSTIN I MET FOUR YEARS AGO AS A FRESHMAN AT FISK, PRESIDENT OF THE ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE, WITH THE LATE GEORGE BARRET, I SAID SOMETHING THAT NIGHT TO GEORGE, THIS IS A YOUNG MAN ON THE GO. I DIDN’T KNOW HE WAS GOING TO END UP IN JAIL WITH A PITCHER LAST YEAR. HE ENDED UP IN JAIL BECAUSE OF WHAT HE BELIEVED IN. HIS WILLINGNESS TO FIGHT, HIS WILLINGNESS TO STAND UP AND SAY NO MORE. WE NEED VOICES LIKE JUSTIN’S, THOSE LIKE AVI THAT ARE IN THE FIGHT. EVERY JOYCE C C COUNTS. EVERY VOICE MATTERS BECAUSE EVERY LIFE MATTERS. THIS IS THE CHARGE. STAND UP. STAND UP. STAND UP. IT’S OUR HUMAN RIGHTS. IF WE DON’T STAND FOR IT, WHO WILL? I’LL BRING BRYAN UP TO LEAD US IN PRAYER.>>LET’S PRAY. TODAY WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED. WE ARE IN A ROOM FULL OF ACTIVISTS, ADVOCATES, AND ACHIEVERS. IT’S BEEN A TIME TO CONNECT AND RECONNECT, REFRESH, RESTORE AND RENEW. I PRAY THAT WE HAVE LEARNED SOMETHING TODAY FROM EACH OTHER, AND GAINED THE COURAGE AND THE ADVENTURE TO GO FORWARD AND LEARN WHAT IS GOING ON SO WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE. I PRAY FOR PEACE. I PRAY FOR LOVE FOR HUMANITY, AND I PRAY THAT WE’LL LIVE TO SEE HUMAN RIGHTS BE MADE A FACT AND NOT AN IDEALISTIC DREAM. IN YOUR NAME WE PRAY, AMEN. THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING. GO IN PEACE. [APPLAUSE ]
