Bill guaranteeing lunches for underprivileged students still unsigned

SHELLY: A LOT OF THE BILLS PASSED THIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION ARE STILL ON THE GOVERNOR’S DESK. ONE IS CATCHING A LOT OF ATTENTION NATIONWIDE AND IT’S A FIRST OF ITS KIND, IT WOULD PREVENT SCHOOLS FROM DENYING KIDS A REDUCED LUNCH IF THEIR PARENTS HAVEN’T PAID FOR IT. ACTION 7 NEWS REPORTER MATT HOWERTON IS HERE TO EXPLAI MATT: HUNGER FREE STUDENTS BILL OF RIGHTS ACT PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS THROUGH THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE. THE BILL WAS CRAFTED FOLLOWING RESEARCH DONE BY NEW MEXIC “APPLESEED,” A NONPROFIT THAT HELPS UNDERPRIVILEGED STUDENTS. THE NONPROFIT FOUND THAT MANY SCHOOLS IN THE STATE WERE DENYING CHILDREN LUNCH BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS OWED MONEY TO THE SCHOOL AFTER SIGNING UP FOR REDUCED LUNCHES. BUT IT DIDN’T STOP THERE.>>THEY GO THROUGH THE WHOLE LUNCH LINE AND THEIR TRAY GE TAKEN AWAY. SOME SCHOOLS WILL STAMP KIDS HANDS, OR MAKE THEM WEAR WRISTBANDS HOME TO REMIND THEIR PARENTS TO PAY. THIS IS HUMILIATING FOR THE KID. MATT: IN A NUTSHELL, THE BILL WOULD FORCE SCHOOLS TO GIVE KIDS THEIR LUNCH REGARDLESS IF THEIR PARENTS OWE MONEY TO THE REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM. EVEN IF A SCHOOL LEARNS A STUDENT IS ELLIGIBLE FOR FREE LUNCHES, IT WOULD THEN BE REQUIRED TO SIGN THAT STUDENT UP FOR THE PROGRAM AND GET THAN THEIR LUNCHES. WE REACHED OUT TO THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE TONIGHT TO SEE IF SHE HAS INTEREST IN SIGNING THE BILL,
