Bill Nye: Can We Stop Telling Women What to Do With Their Bodies? | Big Think

Many, many, many, many more hundreds of eggs
are fertilized than become humans. Eggs get fertilized and by that I mean sperm get accepted
by ova a lot. But that’s not all you need. You have to attach to the uterine wall, the
inside of a womb, a woman’s womb. But if you’re going to hold that as a standard,
that is to say if you’re going to say when an egg is fertilized it’s therefore has
the same rights as an individual, then whom are you going to sue? Whom are you going to
imprison? Every woman who’s had a fertilized egg pass through her? Every guy who’s sperm
has fertilized an egg and then it didn’t become a human? Have all these people failed
you? It’s just a reflection of a deep scientific lack of understanding and you literally or
apparently literally don’t know what you’re talking about. And so when it comes to women’s
right with respect to their reproduction, I think you should leave it to women. This
is really – you cannot help but notice. I’m not the first guy to observe this, you
have a lot of men of European descent passing these extraordinary laws based on ignorance.
Sorry you guys. I know it was written or your interpretation of a book written 5,000 years
ago, 50 centuries ago, makes you think that when a man and a woman have sexual intercourse
they always have a baby. That’s wrong and so to pass laws based on that belief is inconsistent
with nature. I mean it’s hard not to get frustrated with this everybody. And I know
nobody likes abortion, okay. But you can’t tell somebody what to do. I mean she has rights
over this, especially if she doesn’t like the guy that got her pregnant. She doesn’t
want anything to do with your genes, get over it, especially if she were raped and all this.
So it’s very frustrating on the outside, on the other side. We have so many more important
things to be dealing with. We have so many more problems to squander resources on this
argument based on bad science, on just lack of understanding. It’s very frustrating. You wouldn’t know
how big a human egg was if it weren’t for microscopes, if it weren’t for scientists,
medical researchers looking diligently. You wouldn’t know the process. You wouldn’t
have that shot, the famous shot or shots where the sperm are bumping up against the egg.
You wouldn’t have that without science. So then to claim that you know the next step
when you obviously don’t is trouble. Let me do that again. Let me just pull back. At
some point we have to respect the facts. Recommending or insisting on abstinence has been completely
ineffective. Just being objective here. Closing abortion clinics. Closing, not giving women
access to birth control has not been an effective way to lead to healthier societies. I mean
I think we all know that. And I understand that you have deeply held beliefs and it really
is ultimately out of respect for people, in this case your perception of unborn people.
I understand that. But I really encourage you to look at the facts. And I know people
are now critical of the expression fact based but what’s wrong with that? So I just really
encourage you to not tell women what to do and not pursue these laws that really are
in nobody’s best interest. Just really be objective about this. We have other problems
to solve everybody. Come on. Come on. Let’s work together.

  • Benjamin Cooley

It’s a great point on the unenforceabilty of a law regarding the body of an individual to be forced to give life— even when that life was forced upon her. How is that possible much less ethical? It’s no different than leaving a baby on someone’s doorstep and making it a law that if you find it you must raise it…

  • ZOD4

I completely agree with him of course, I don't know why anyone wouldn't, but I will say that I don't think anyone is saying that every egg that's fertilised becomes a fetus. Yes, they are saying that fertilisation is when human life starts but if those eggs don't take and survive, then surely that's just death in their eyes? That would be the same as a baby dying naturally in the womb according to them, and obviously they're not saying people should be locked up for that.

  • Yeshua IsLord

Your Arguement really lacks intelligence. You get the Biggest Fool award. Praying for you Nye you are certainly loss on many different topics. Work Together for infanticide?

  • MommytoLucius

Are you really this stupid now? Did you have brain trauma or something? These laws aren’t being passed based on religious beliefs. They’re based on the science of fetal development. And no one but you has ever said anything about suing for a fertilized egg failing to attach to the uterine wall. That’s just a ludicrous story you made up. (And maybe, just maybe, if the woman doesn’t like the guy, she shouldn’t have had sex with him!) I mean the ridiculous amount of made up crap you’re spouting here is kind of hard to keep up with. I listened to your whole propaganda video and can’t pick out a single fact other than that a fertilized egg needs to attach to the uterine wall in order to develop. I find it utterly ridiculous that you accuse others of being ignorant of science when you have plugged your ears and closed your eyes and “la la la’d” your way through the rest of fetal development because if you quit ignoring it you’d have to admit that it becomes recognizable as a human baby well before you people think it’s still okay to kill it. Guess you’re just Bill The Guy now because science has left the building

  • fallcherry

edit: when it comes to law. not saying ethics and religion are totally irrelevant because they're important in law, but in this case it's just a no no.

  • Cringe Master 9000

Alright so if I saw my neighbor get murdered, I shouldn’t step in and stop the murder because I can’t tell him what to do 🙄🙄🙄 thanks Bill

  • nah whey

Bill: I acknowledge the unborn are people, but women have the right to kill those people and men dont have the right to have any say in the matter because I'm sexist even tho pro-abortions laws passed because of men.
    Ok bill, ok.

  • ET_Luke

"Who are you going to sue when a fertilized egg doesn't get stuck on the wall of the uteris" is this guy fucking retarded??? Who are you going to sue when a mother has a miscarriage… what a fucking brainless moron.

  • orvin13

"when a man and a woman have sexual intercourse they always have a baby. That's wrong and so to pass laws based on that belief is inconsistent with nature". Hmm really? well then i guess im inconsistent with nature because i have been doing that the whole time no wonder why she isn't getting pregnant.

Well then how do you be consistent with nature than hmm? How do you get a baby?

Bill Nye: "I mean it's hard not to get frustrated with this everybody. And i know nobody likes abortion, okay."

Oh so we are just not going to address that part and move on to abortion. Well I guess I'll never know.

  • Brenden Postma

Agreeing with a lot of what people already said. Miscarriage is not the same as abortion. It's comparing natural death to be the same as murder. It's not about making laws based on fertilization, it's about what we do when we already have a fertilized egg. Second, why should we kill people just because we don't like their parents? The facts in no way support anything which he just said. It's all logically unsound. Bill Nye, you're great and all, but wake up to the facts.

  • Anna Anna

It is true that women have there own bodies and what they do with them is their choice but killing a baby is a selfish act and is murder this interview is horrible and he is acting like we are five and have no idea what sex is and about the reproductive system and the comment about “ nobody like abortion” well no duh you are killing A HUMAN BEING that was sent down here for a purpose and talking about how there are bigger problems to worry about no there is not murdering babies is a big problem and those that argue that the babies don’t have a brain or organs or heartbeat so when a living person has organ failure are you going to let them die just because they don’t have organs it is completely pathetic that bill nye even opened his mouth about this and he kept saying that it’s all about the facts even though he listed absolutely nothing factual Bill Nye the science guy more like Bill Nye the Unscientific guy 🙄

  • Michael 마익흘 Aronson

Hey pro-lifers, if you believe abortion is murder, then next time someone gets an abortion, try calling the police.

After all, murder is illegal and police arrest murderers.

    They'll totally believe you.

  • GhostRider2224

There weren’t many points made, he was mainly saying that he thinks woman should have the right to kill another human being. How about the fetus’ rights. The fetus is the one most affected by the abortion.

  • Hana Yancey

A fetus doesn't stay in a woman forever. I don't see why woman should be allowed to take the easy way out of their consequences.

Do you have children Bill??? Would you of been ok if your wife decided to murder your children before they were born? Should you not have a say about your own child? Sick fuck!! More important things to worry about??? Are our children not important??? Evil psycho nut job

  • Katelynne Hansen

I advocate for a world where every child born, is one that was truly wanted. Children should not be a punishment for someone’s mistake or failed contraceptive, or worse, for rape or incest. They should be something hoped and planned for, something that can be cared for in the highest possible standards. This is only possible when women are well educated, empowered, and have full access to birth control including abortion as a back-up, so that she’ll only ever bring a baby into the world when she’s truly ready.

  • Katelynne Hansen

What kills me, is this mentality that children should be a consequence, almost a punishment, for someone having sex. These people seem to forget that children are not a punishment and it is THE CHILDREN who are truly being punished, by being brought into a family where they are unwanted or cannot be cared for properly.

Even in adoption situations, many many children never find a home, and the realities for children that age out in the system are NOT pretty.

I care about human life and want to decrease suffering. That means having an empowered educated populace who can make good responsible choices about their sexuality (because humans are highly sexual), having readily available contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancy, and having abortions available if an unwanted pregnancy still occurs, so that they can end the life long before it is aware and can feel pain.

“But every life is valuable and deserves a chance!” Is it though? Think of the worst people in history or even just the worst people you know; think of the childhood they had that shaped the terrible person they became. Do you want more of those people? Do you not think it’s a humans memories, feelings, ambitions, actions, the people they love and the ones that love them, that make them special? The only thing an early term fetus has on that list, is those that love them, and that’s only if they are wanted.

Is a canvas worth making if it’s going to be shat upon and thrown away? Or should we reserve those blank canvases of endless potential, for those that want to create a masterpiece?

  • Angelina Mangless

There are so many women who have tried to conceive but have failed and still want children so they turn to adoption and have been waiting years to get a child. You can’t just take someone’s life away like that just because it’s “their body” those children have a future like everybody else and they deserve to live it and have a chance at life just like everyone else and who knows maybe that child grows up to become a superstar who everyone aspires to be.
Btw Foster kids are kids who are not put up for adoption. In order to be legally adopted you need to have parental consent so don’t talk about how bad foster care is because I already know and I do believe that there are some good people out there who do truly want to help others because most people who foster kids do. Ps they do background checks and I know some bad mentally ill people still get through background checks but most don’t

  • Roxane Nieves

To support abortion or to think it's a decent procedure, look at Abortion procedures of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters by Live Action and spoken by Dr. Levantino. Those are the facts about abortion. Your baby will feel itself getting slaughtered.

  • Reality Speaks

We would punish people who carry out the abortion, not the women who had it. This has already been established. The pro-life movement is in favor of contraception. And if you claim that it is just a clump of cells, guess what? YOU ARE, TOO! But nobody has a right to kill you, so why should people have a right to kill their kids? Pay attention to the argument before you make yours.

  • Spellu Sama

This fool isn't even a scientist. And if you wait 2 months with someone else's kid in you they should have a say.

  • Michael 마익흘 Aronson

You ever notice how pro-lifers like to shoot up or burn down abortion clinics, but pro-choice advocates never attack, protest, or do anything about fertility clinics?

  • microwaved spaghetti

Science says an embryo that fails to implant in the womb is a genetically abnormal embryo:

What pro lifers defend is that a healthy fertilized embryo suited for life should be protected (otherwise why making a pro life point if the embryo can't develop because inherent abnormalities).

Pro lifers are against abortion (edit: and preventing implantation) (morally permitted in some cases). If implantation fails you can't perform an abortion, because technically an abortion can only be done if the embryo succeeds to implant. If the embryo fails to implant and it flushes out it's not called abortion, it's called a miscarriage.

In my opinion, if we can detect beforehand a future failure at implantation something should be done to save that life. If we cannot detect then it's a tragedy and no one is to blame.

Here's another article about a scientific (not religious) explanation about when life begins (spoiler: at conception):

So I hope this serves to straighten your arguments.

  • Wurtweakle

if we stop telling women what to do with their bodies that means we cant stop them from killing themselves.and besides the childs body IS another body and deserves rights.

  • RichardCorral

He uses science to mean lot of different things. Its like a trump card he pulls out when he doesn't have a
    sound argument.

  • No Name

I am a pro-science, female, atheist, and I am pro-life. If you have a miscarriage you lost a child. Why is it a life for one but a clump of cells for another. Does the mother decide if it is a life?

  • XxJohnny Gulag69xX

Without a god existing, morality is subjective. Therefore, how can someone who has shown much distaste about the existence of a god have morals. This man is a hypocrite.

  • xxac3z N 8zxx

Man: kills someone and gets life in prison
Woman: kills a baby as a "right"
    Feminist: EQUAL RIGHTS

man: I wanna keep the baby I love it
Female: I dont wanna keep the baby because idgaf
    kills the baby
    Feminist: EQUAL RIGHTS

This shits pathetic😂😂😂😂killing people is wrong, if you cant take responsibility for ur actions dont have sex, every action has consequences, our parents always told us this growing up. "Dont tell someone what to do", guess we cant tell murderers not to murder, oh wait we already aren't cus were trying to let people murder babies. "Its they're body" this argument has been proven wrong over and over by science. Abortion basically comes down to this, a baby can be an inconvenience and women want a right to convenience, but what about the babies rights, oh never mind it doesnt have rights because you just decided that ur right to convenience is more important that ALL of the rights that baby had and u went ahead and murdered the thing. I'm sure if we asked babies who had been aborted if it should be legal they would say hell no, and they should have the most say in this argument but guess what: they're dead so they cant give their opinion at all, that must be very convenient for all the pro murder babies people out there.

  • Daniel Bentley

The act of Abortion is unconstitutional. Take away all the abortion clinics and than I'll be satisfied with the direction this country is going in. A naturally unsuccessful pregnancy is not rightfully comparable to abortion. Sounds much like a murderer saying that he was, " Just directly causing something that happens all the time." Also, calling people that disagree with you unintelligent only manipulates the weak minded. This is what Evolution has done to your heart. Congratulations your soul has evolved to stone.

  • JohnnyRock2000

The issue is that it's being used now for a standard method of birth control AND the successful goal is to give a woman the power to have the baby decapitated on it's way to delivery out the birth canal. Or should we call it Death Canal??

  • Zion Wolf

It is easy to claim that men and women are equal but in reality, this is never true! The idea of abstinence is not just to avoid pregnancy but to avoid the implications that may arise especially on women! According to science, women that have sexual intercourse ( almost 99% of American women) do not only run the risk of getting pregnant but are vulnerable to withholding male dna in their brains through sperm! That is why women are supposed to have only one sexual partner! These DNAs result in different behavior portraying behaviors of past male partners!

  • JohnnyRock2000

The issue is also about replacement. When a birthrate of a nation drops beneath 2.1 the existing people are not replaced and the population declines. And so it becomes important to somehow encourage women to have enough babies to replace the existing population.

I know an expert carpenter that says Bill Nye is an idiot, I think the carpenter is right, why? Cause he is an expert carpenter, and experts are always right about what they say regardless of what field they are talking about.
Does this sound stupid? Well, of course it does, just as stupid as believing Nye understands logic or bioethics enough to make at least one good non-faulty argument on the subject just cause he knows other things. At least 5 fallacies and didn't mention the word human when it was most appropriate, very conveniently, what a waste of a brain.

When I was only 17 years old, my crazy aunt Judy began yelling at me for being skinny. I told her that there was nothing wrong with being skinny and she said, "everything is wrong with being skinny if you're a woman! I used to be skinny, but then I became a woman." Then she kept on taking me to the doctors nonstop just so they could put me on Depakote so I could gain weight. Judy just wanted me to gain weight because she thinks that's what all women should look like. I even told her that I began getting my period at 12 years old and she said, "that's not enough. If you're a woman, you have to be unhealthily obese. All women look that way." And when I was 18 years old, I began gaining lots and lots of weight. I told my doctor Lynn that I kept on falling asleep in class at school and gaining lots of weight. And Lynn just brushed it off and she said, "that's all part of being a woman. You'll get used to it." And Judy said, "yes. All women are obese." And when I saw my cousin Ozzy and his girlfriend, Ozzy asked Judy where she's gonna take me and Judy said, "the doctors. Hannah needs to understand what a woman should look like and how she should behave." And then Ozzy's girlfriend was all like, "Judy, are the doctors putting Hannah on drugs?" And then Judy said, "no." Then Judy took me back to the doctors and made them put me on drugs. In November of 2014, the doctors put me on a deadly dosage of Depakote. I was too tired to get up to go to school the next morning and Judy kept on yelling at me to get up and go to school. I told her that I'm too sick and tired. Then Judy took Joseph to school. Then I reached to obesity and Judy stopped taking me to the doctors. I missed lots and lots of school and all my friends and teachers were worried about me. Mommy then yelled at me for being fat. Even on Sunday when we were all going to church, she said, "Hannah, your belly is sticking out. You look like you're 7 months pregnant!" And then I said, "you gotta accept the fact that your little girl is officially a woman. This is what all women should look like." And then Mommy said, "yeah, when they're 50!" When I turned 19 years old, I went to this new school and I got bullied because I was obese and everybody thought that I was pregnant. During summer school, I began eating less and less. I began losing some weight. On my 20th birthday, I quit Depakote cold turkey. After I ate my birthday cake and drank my milk, I stopped eating for good. I starved myself for weeks and I began losing weight. Then Mommy had to take me to the doctors and then to the hospital. I lost over 60 pounds. When I went back to school, I began feeling great. But then, in October of 2016, I began feeling sick again, so Mommy had to take me back to the hospital. The doctors and nurses said that I had ovarian cysts. I even threw up blood. Yeah. Blood. When I came out of the hospital, I went back to school. Judy didn't get arrested. Neither did Lynn. She moved to California. Mommy tells me to never trust Judy to take me to the doctors. Judy never did that to any of my little brothers because they're boys. She only does that to girls. Judy thinks that all women should all be the same. Obese, ugly, unhealthy, weak, and always angry.

That is not what the book says at all and it’s not even close to what we believe. If you are going to talk to us like children get your facts right

"Many eggs don't make it" is not a supporting statement against The issue, which is about the bodies that are being formed. Bill Nye is a Disney Character. Remember that folks.

  • Keali'i Cooper

If a woman can choose to get rid of the baby, the man should be able to choose if he wants to father it or not, my money my choice

  • fox fan

I think the people who are against abortion should focus on getting better birth control, then we wouldn't have this problem in the first place!

  • Grace Usala

I’m glad lots of people are picking out the logical fallacies. I don’t even know what “inconsistent with nature” means. He didn’t touch up on the main prolife argument against telling women what to do with their bodies, which is that the zygote has its own individual dna signature that is separate from both parents, thus making it not her body on a biological level. That’s why prolifers believe they “should control women’s bodies”—they literally don’t see it as her body. He didn’t make any good counter arguments to that.

  • Axel Smith

For the last fucking time, it is not just the woman's body. Inside the woman's body their is a completely separate human being who in and of itself is it's own body. I am so sick of people rewording this to make it sound like pro-lifers want to control woman's bodies. We don't think it is right to kill the baby inside the woman's body. This is so goddamn basic.

  • Dean

This guy isn't even a scientist. He's nothing but a lying ideological atheist who take every chance to bash theists under his garbage science.

  • Johanna Parrish

Bill apparently you don't know what your talking about. You are a man trying to shove abortion down our throats. The Bible is not the main reason for pro-life. What about that you can see a baby's heart beat via ultrasound at 6 weeks. You Bill aren't following science. At conception a whole new individual set of DNA and RNA I'd created a unique human life. For me you "fake" scientist are the ones pushing abortion. Your a man so by your own statements you should sit down and shut up

  • Ned Flanders

His argument is great.. no one like abortion, no one is like “let’s kill some babies today!” This discussion is only filled with ignorant dudes who instead want to control women’s bodies more than anything

  • Ebk Neon

The irony, about Bill Nye the "science" guy, is that he says men, don't have say over women's bodies, well, then this raises the question? What if the guy, just happens to say he identifies as a girl now, heck he doesn't even have to do that, the far left says that you should not assume one's gender, so he's just assuming, that the person who got her pregnant identifies as a man. Not to mention, what if there is a girl who thinks she is a guy, who gets pregnant by a guy who identifies as a girl, or she identifies as a man, but gets pregnant by a man? Who gets say in the abortion? Also, he doesn't understand, that the arguments being used, are rather fallacious. Bill Nye doesn't understand reality, he makes fun of people who believe in the stories, and miracles of the bible, meanwhile he believes that there is no life until the very second the baby takes a breath, and he believes that men and women can become the other gender at will, and not to mention he believes in a religion, too. He worships the statements of liberal agenda. And lastly, whether someone believes in evolution or creationism is of no substance to me, but the thing I find hilarious is people like him will say that homeschooling your kids and teaching them creationism is child abuse, because it's anti-scientific. Meanwhile, these same people are the ones who want abortions handed out like candy, and want six-year-old Jimmy on estrogen, because he said he likes girls.

  • Sean Avilucea

Abortion is horrible. If a woman doesnt want to get pregnant she should learned to keep her pants on. Why should a child have to suffer bc of her lack of restraint.

If a woman gets full control on whether the child dies or not, then as a man I should not be expected to spend my life raising and supporting a child that I have no say on their mortality. In the words of Dave Chappelle: "my money, my choice".

  • nownigel

God is good, women miscarry fertile eggs at a rate of 50% before implantation.

The abortion pill blocks the pregnancy hormone and restart a women cycle.

If a women wasn’t supposed to have a right to choice we’d give birth like reptiles.

  • nownigel

Women aren’t here to have your children. They can have your children, so can a prosthetic uterus.

Look yourself in the mirror and ask, why are women the target instead of the men who abort their semen in hopes they get their genetic code spread.

She’s not forced to have your children and the more you fight against pro-choice ideals the closer we get to a word we’re birth control is banned and women are frown upon for not have as many children as possible.

This is America, the greatest nation on earth. Trust the legal system and it’s Turing to a pro-choice country.

We use stem cells, we give women rights. This ain’t Africa. This ain’t china. This is America. The greatest nation in human history, so far.

  • noneya85

Wow this is disappointing. Arguing about fertilized eggs? That’s so weak. Women can’t even confirm that they are pregnant that early on. Therefore, abortion isn’t even possible at that stage (unless you count the morning after pill as a type of abortion). Also, just because an unborn baby is dependent on its mother to live doesn’t mean it’s not a separate human being… Whether the baby is at one month gestation, delivered early at 22 weeks, or six months old, it is completely dependent on other people to survive.

  • Jesse Bryant

A lot of fools thumbed this dumb video up…

Also, can you say: prostitution, seat belt laws, public nudity… STOP signs… your fist and my face! We're always telling folks what they can and cannot do with their bodies… Bill, appeals to emotion ≠ science. Please.
