Donor offers to pay for removal of Confederate monuments

THE CITY COUNCIL FORMALLY RECEIVED SEVEN LETTERS FROM SEVERAL COMMISSIONS, THE CITY ATTORNEY, THE CAO, THE NOPD SUPERINTENDENT, AND THE DIRECTOR OF PROPERTY MANAGEMENT, ALL CALLING FOR THE REMOVAL OF FOUR CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS. CHUI CLARK: THAT’S A DONE DEAL. THEY SHOULD JUST MOVE FORWARD WITH THE COMMISSION THAT SIGNED IT. THEY DECIDED THAT THE STATUES SHOULD BE REMOVED AND THAT’S IT. GEORGE PETERSON: ALL OF THEIR DECISIONS WERE PRE-ORDAINED BEFORE THE HEARING WERE EVEN HELD BECAUSE THEY’RE BASICALLY THERE TO SERVE AT THE PLEASURE OF THE MAYOR. CASEY: CHIEF MICHAEL HARRISON SUPPORTS THE REMOVAL CALLING THEM FLASHPOINTS FOR CRIMINAL ACTIVITY AND CIVIL UNREST, AND SAYING HE CAN’T AFFORD TO DEDICATE MANPOWER TO PROTECTING INANIMATE STATUES. THE CITY’S DIRECTOR OF PROPERTY MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDED REMOVAL SAYING THE $4000 SPENT THIS YEAR REMOVING GRAFFITI FROM THREE OF THE MONUMENTS, COULD BE BETTER SPENT. DEPUTY MAYOR ANDY KOPPLIN SAID THE QUESTION OF WHO WILL FUND THE REMOVAL HAS BEEN ANSWERED WITH AN ANONYMOUS DONOR WILLING TO COVER THE COST — AN ESTIMATED $126,000. TIM SHEA CARROLL: I DON’T BELIEVE THIS ANONYMOUS DONOR IS PAYING FOR THE MONUMENTS. THAT DOLLAR AMOUNT IS RIDICULOUSLY LOW BASED ON ESTIMATES THAT HAVE BEEN GOTTEN FROM CIVIL ENGINEERS AND CONTRACTORS. CASEY: THE MONUMENTAL TASK FORCE WHICH DOES MAINTANENCE WORK ON ALL MONUMENTS IN THE CITY HAS ESTIMATED IT COULD COST 1 MILLION, NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS TO DIMANTAL, HAUL AND STORE THE FOUR MONUMENTS FOR A MONTH. THAT DONATION WOULDN’T PAY FOR ONE CRANE TO BE AT ONE MONUMENT FOR ONE DAY. THAT’S NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING. IT’S A FRONT. IT’S A FALSE STATEMENT JUST SO THAT THE MAYOR CAN SHOW THAT ”OH, WE HAVE SOME PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE THIS DONATION,’. CASEY: THE COUNCIL DIDN’T TAKE ANY ACTION TODAY. AN ORDINANCE NOT OFFICIALLY BEEN INTRODUCED ON THIS ISSUE. ON YOUR SIDE, CASEY FERRAND,
