EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announces One National Program Rule

President Trump promised the American
public that his administration would address and fix the current fuel economy
and greenhouse gas emission standards. Today we are delivering on a critical
element of the President’s commitment. EPA and DOT are issuing a final action
that will establish one set of national fuel economy standards. Let me be clear,
our goal from the beginning was a 50-state solution.
I met with CARB three times since taking the lead at EPA over a year ago, but
despite our best efforts we could not reach a solution. We embrace federalism
in the role of states, but federalism does not mean that one state can dictate
standards for the entire country. To borrow from Louisiana Attorney
General Jeff Landry, CAFE does not stand for “California Assumes Federal
Empowerment.
