Episode 4 – Case Study – Debriefing in Crisis Intervention.mp4


There is an essential need
for crisis intervention skills- -within the Swedish Armed Forces. An increasing part of military
personnel are stationed abroad- -on international assignments- -and many experience stressful and
traumatic situations while on mission. How people are affected
by such events is individual- -and depends on things
like previous experiences- -ability to handle stress
and psychological stability. To avoid psychological damage
from traumatic experiences- -a well structured crisis
intervention system is important. Debriefing conversations
are one part of this system. Today,
debriefing education and training- -is conducted
in a classroom environment. First, the course students
attend lectures and classes- -where theories on the subject
are discussed. After the theoretical introduction,
the students are shown an example- -of a debriefing session between
a victim and a debriefing specialist. This lets them observe the methods
and structure of the conversation- -as an outside viewer. I wasn’t really thinking at all.
I waited to see if he would come in… Next, the participants
are divided into groups of three- -in which they take turns talking
about an event they have experienced. One person acts
as the debriefing specialist- -and one person
observes the conversation- -in order to give feedback afterwards. -You asked a few closed questions.
-Like for instance? “What happened next? Did you get
any rest?” That’s a yes or no question. The Land Warfare Centre
is now considering- -conducting parts
of the training online. There are several benefits to putting
the educational material online. The first thing that comes to mind
is availability. Course material that is now used
in classroom teaching- -can be made available to more people. We would reach more people
without having to work more. There are also quality aspects. Individuals who take this course
can prepare a lot more- -and the individual can decide which
areas to delve into more thoroughly- -and which areas
to just browse through- -based on the person’s
level of knowledge. As a teacher, I get well-prepared
students attending my course- -and I’m able to start off
the course at a higher level. Online teaching is structured
the same way as classroom teaching. You look at
what the purpose of the course is. There are some benefits
to online teaching. One easy thing is to take
the lecture material and the theories- -and convert that into online teaching. It can be very basic things- -but also more interactive parts
for the students to delve into. You can also include
advanced course material- -that you don’t have time for
during classroom teaching. Interested individuals
can delve deeper into things. It would also be beneficial
when it comes to- -the demonstration exercise which
we now conduct in the classroom- -where we demonstrate
a live conversation for the students. It could be made into a video clip
where you go into more detail. You can comment on what
is said during the conversation. It would help provide a clearer idea- -of what an ideal conversation
would be like. Further along into the training,
you could have different cases- -which people can discuss
on Internet forums. They can evaluate and judge
if it’s been a good conversation. How did the debriefer err?
How did he support the conversation? When you use video,
you are able to go into great detail- -and provide many examples
of what to do and what not to do. It could be used to highlight
question techniques- -and things
like open and closed questions. What online teaching
cannot do for us- -is replace the meeting of people. That is what
the conversation training is all about. People meet
and look into each other’s eyes. You have to be able to examine
body language and tone of voice- -to find out how a person is doing. It’s necessary that we actually
meet and talk to each other. It’s a capability that people
pick up as part of that training. But online teaching can help students
become well prepared- -so that we can begin
at a higher level when they get here.
