Fresno City Council votes to move Darling rendering plant away from Southwest Fresno neighborhoods

OF DARLING INGREDIENTS IS ON WEST BELGRAVIA AVENUE.. NEAR A BUNCH OF SOUTHWEST FRESNO NEIGHBOR HOODS… THE PROPOSED SITE IS ABOUT FIVE MILES WEST… IN A MORE RURAL AREA ON CITY LAND NEXT TO THE WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT. PEOPLE WHO CURRENTLY LIVE NEAR THE PLANT SAY IT’S A MOVE THAT WILL CHANGE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE. THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR IN SOUTHWEST FRESNO…. A SMELL ONLY DESCRIBED AS THIS- Mary Curry, Southwest Fresno Resident 17;20;00 “Get a shower…. THAT BAD? Mhm, i’ve been in there and i cant tell you how bad it was i had to get home and get in the shower.” 17;28;20 THE SMELL MARY CURRY IS REFFERING TO COMES FROM “DARLING INGREDIENTS” … A MEAT RENDERING PLANT THAT TAKES ANIMAL BY-PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES THEM INTO ANIMAL FOOD, FERTILIZER AND FUEL… PROVIDING DOZENS OF LOCAL JOBS… BUT ALSO A LINGERING STENCH ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD. Mary Curry, West Fresno Resident 10;45;22 “We have a lot of industrial sites that have been created in west Fresno and at one time that was just the dumping ground.” 10;53;07 THAT’S WHY THE CONCERNED CITIZENS OF WEST FRESNO COMMUNITY GROUP FOUGHT FOR YEARS TO GET THE PLANT MOVED OUT OF THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD SAYING IT IMPACTED THEIR HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE.. Mary Curry, West Fresno Resident 10;05;16 “it was detrimental to everything we were involved in, going to church there was always a smell, and I met a teacher from carver school who said he couldn’t open the windows at the school because of the smell was so strong.” 10;19;23 AFTER TALKS OF THE PLANT EXPANDING… THE C-C-W-F GOT ATTORNEY ASHLEY WERNER INVOLVED. ashley Werner, senior attorney at leadership council for justice and accountability 02;39;22 “they have been subjected to racially subjective land-use practices, housing practices and the resident of that community have really had to struggle and fight for generations for equality and justice.” 02;51;26 AFTER SEVERAL LAWSUITS BETWEEN C-C-W-F, THE CITY, AND THE COMPANY. THURSDAY… A MILESTONE VOTE… AS THE CITY COUNCIL APPROVED A DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT AS WELL AS PERMITS FOR CONSTRUCTION AT A NEW LOCATION…. ON W. JENSEN AVE., CITY LAND NEAR THE WASTEWATER TREATMENT CENTER. KIRSTEN: THE PLANT COULD POTENTIALLY EXPAND THEIR OPERATIONS AT THIS NEW LOCATION SO THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS HOPE IT’S A WIN-WIN.. THERE’S STILL SOME LOOSE THREADS ON THE DEAL REGARDING FUNDING OF THE RELOCATION. AND WE REACHED OUT TO DARLING INGREDIENTS TO COMMENT ON THIS STORY BUT DID NOT HEAR BACK. REPORTING IN STUDIO KIRSTEN
