Greene Co. Commission votes against becoming a ‘Second Amendment sanctuary,’ passes alternative vers


TONIGHT GREENE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS VOTED ON A RESOLUTION THAT WOULD HAVE DECLARED THE COUNTY A SECOND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY. GOOD EVENING — THIS IS NEWS CHANNEL 11 AT ELEVEN. I’M SARA DIAMOND. AND I’M JOSH SMITH.. THAT RESOLUTION REQUESTED THAT THE TENNESSEE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND THE U-S CONGRESS PROTECT THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT FOR PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS. IF PASSED – THE RESOLUTION WOULD HAVE ASKED THE TENNESSEE GENERAL AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO DECLARE GREENE A SECOND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY. THAT ESSENTIALLY WOULD HAVE RULED OUT THE USE OF ANY RESOURCES TO ENFORCE GUN CONTROL MEANSURES THAT VIOLATE THE SECOND AMENDMENT. NEWS CHANNEL 11’S KRISTEN GALAN WAS AT THAT MEETING TONIGHT WHEN THE COMMISSION LOCKED IN THEIR FINAL VOTES. LL: THE GREENE COUNTY COMMISSION VOTED AGAINST MAKING THE COUNTY A SECOND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY COUNTY. SEVERAL PEOPLE COMING TO THE MEETING TONIGHT TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS BEFORE THE VOTE AND IT WAS ALSO A LENGTHY DISCUSSION BETWEEN COMMISSIONERS.==============================PKG: “SIX YES ELEVEN NO.” THE RESOLUTION TO MAKE GREENE COUNTY A SECOND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY COMMUNITY WAS NOT PASSED AT MONDAY NIGHTS GREENE COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING. “THERE WAS RESOLUTION A THAT WOULD MAKE GREENE COUNTY A SANCTUARY COUNTY AND THEN THERE WAS RESOLUTION B THAT EVENTUALLY OFFERED THE SAME THING– SUPPORT FOR THE SECOND AMENDMENT AND PEOPLE RIGHT TO KEEP AND BARE ARMS WITHOUT THE LANGUAGE OF OPEN DEFIANCE OF THE LAW OF THE LAND.” RESOLUTION “B” HOWEVER– “TWELVE YES, FIVE NO, THREE ABSENT. THE RESOLUTION IS CARRIED.” BUT BEFORE THE VOTES WERE EVEN MADE– GREENE COUNTY RESIDENTS DECIDING TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE RESOLUTIONS– NAT: “I WAS OUTRAGED TO READ RESOLUTION B” NAT: “IT IS OUR FEELING THAT THE SECOND AMENDMENT SANCTUARY RESOLUTION CURRENTLY BEING CONSIDERED IS A MEANINGLESS EXERCISE AND SHOULD NOT BE PASSED.” “I THINK WHAT THE PEOPLE WERE ASKING EVENTUALLY WAS WE WANT OUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES TO SUPPORT THE SECOND AMENDMENT FOR GUN OWNERSHIP, FOR GUN RIGHTS AND NOT HAVE THE DUE PROCESS BE TAKEN AWAY.” THE RESOLUTION WAS SPONSORED BY COMMISSIONER CLIFFORD BRYANT. “THESE WORDS ARE FORCEFUL BECAUSE OUR FOUNDING FATHERS KNEW THAT THEY WERE NECESSARY.” IF PASSED– THE COUNTY WOULD NOT USE RESOURCES TO ENFORCE GUN CONTROL MEASURES THAT MAY BE IN VIOLATION OF SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS. GREENE COUNTY SHERIFF WESLEY HOLT SAYING– “I WOULDN’T ENFORCE IF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CAME IN HERE AND ASKED US TO TAKE THEIR GUNS AWAY I WOULDN’T ASK MY OFFICERS TO ENFORCE IT AND I WOULDN’T ENFORCE IT.”========================================LL: SHERIFF WESLEY HOLT SAYS HE STRONGLY SUPPORTS THE SECOND AMENDMENT AND PEOPLES RIGHT TO BARE ARMS. OVER THIRTY PEOPLE SIGNED UP TO SPEAK AT TONIGHT’S MEETING BUT DURING THE MEETING SEVERAL OF THEM DECLINED TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF THE COMMISSION.
