How to File an Exempt Bus Operator Use Fuel Tax Return


In this video, we will show you how to
file an Exempt Bus Operator Use Fuel Tax Return. We protect all the confidential
information you provide to us. First go to the website CDTFA.CA.GOV and at the
top click on “login.” That will take you to the Online Services Portal. To file an
Exempt Bus Operator Use Fuel Tax Return, you must log in with a username and
password. For assistance with creating a username and password please watch our
tutorials online, On this screen you will see a list of available tax and fee
programs. In this example we are filing an Exempt Bus Operator Use Fuel Tax
Return which is under the Fuel taxes program. Click on the file pay and view
link located here. On the CDTFA online services page we will enter our username
and password. Then click “login.” On the portal home page, under the Accounts tab,
we will click on the Alternative Fuel Exempt Bus hyperlink. This will take us to the Alternative
Fuel Exempt Bus account page. Under the periods tab click on the return period
for which you would like to file. In our example, we will file for the 3rd
Quarter 2019, which is displayed by its return end date of September 30th, 2019.
Click on the file return hyperlink next to the period for which you are filing.
This brings us to the page – Which fuel types are you filing for? Select yes or
no for the type of fuel you use to operate vehicles both in and out of
California, including fuel used by a lessee of your vehicles if you are
responsible for furnishing the fuel. In our example, we have used Compressed
Natural Gas only. We will select Yes for Compressed Natural Gas and no for the
remaining fuel types. Click the “Next” button to proceed. This brings us to the
Schedule A – Compressed Natural Gas Screen. Please note, you will see the same screen
for each fuel type you are reporting. When reporting values, report all values
to the nearest unit or gallon. Compressed Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas
are reported as units. All other fuel types are reported as gallons. Compressed
Natural Gas units are reported at a gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) which is
equal to 126.67 cubic feet or 5.66 pounds at standard pressure and temperature. Liquefied Natural Gas
units are reported at a diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) which is
equal to 6.06 pounds. Enter the total units of Compressed Natural
Gas used in motor vehicles. Enter the total units of Compressed Natural Gas
used in a nontaxable manner if any. In our example, we have 500,000 units of Compressed Natural Gas used in motor vehicles, We do not have
any non-taxable use of Compressed Natural Gas. After entering in the proper
units, click the next button to proceed. this brings us to the Compressed Natural
Gas page. Enter the total units of Compressed Natural Gas used in an exempt
manner for qualifying transit services. Enter the amount of use fuel tax paid to
vendors on Compressed Natural Gas purchased in California. Do not include
federal fuel tax or state and local sales and use taxes. In our example
500,000 units of compressed natural gas was used for local transit services and
we have no tax paid to California vendors. We will click the next button to
continue. On the summary page, review the information displayed. If you need to
make corrections, click the “Previous” button to return to the applicable pages
to edit information. If everything is correct, click “Next” to proceed. On the
your information page enter your required information and click “Submit.” When you click “Submit,” a window will
appear to confirm your intent to file electronically and that your return is
true, correct and complete. Please read the information carefully. Enter your
password and click “OK” to submit. This will serve as your
authorization and confirmation. You will not receive a confirmation email. This
confirmation page represents your return filing only. To make an electronic
payment click on the “Make a Payment” button. To print your submitted return
