Several SC lawmakers concerned after comprehensive education bill passes in the House

AFTER SIX HOURS ON THE FLOOR SOUTH CAROLINA REPRESENTATIVES PAST MAJOR CHANGES TO THE EDUCATION SYSTEM. IT PASSED WITH 100 AND 13 TO 4. Reporter: THE BILL PASSED WITH AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY. BUT NOT EVERYONE WAS ON BOARD. A HANDFUL OF REPRESENTATIVES OF VOTED NO. SOUTH CAROLINA REPRESENTATIVES DEBATED IN EDUCATION BILL FOR MORE THAN FIVE HOURS. ADDRESSING TEACHER SALARIES, SCHOOL TESTING, AND THIRD GRADER READINESS. THERE’S GOING TO BE HUNDRED 15 MILLION DOLLARS EARMARKED FOR TEACHING. AND WE LOWERED THE RATIO FOR TEACHERS. AND SOME SCHOOLS THERE’S NOT A BREAK ALLOWED FOR TEACHERS. TEACHERS WILL NOW RECEIVE A 30 MINUTE BREAK. KEY TAKEAWAYS WERE RAISED IN SALARIES TO $35,000. A STUDENT BILL OF RIGHTS, AND TESTING. THERE’S NOTHING IN THAT BILL THAT WILL REDUCE CLASSROOM SIZE. WHAT THEY DID TOWARDS INTO THE DEBATE WAS GIVEN APPROVAL TO AN AMENDMENT THAT STUDIES THE NOTION OF CLASSROOM SIZE. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT WE DON’T NEED TO STUDY THAT ISSUE. WE KNOW THAT SMALLER CLASSES WORK. Reporter: THE BILL WILL FACE OPPOSITION IN THE SENATE. THERE’S NOTHING IN THE BILL THAT TRANSFORMS THE CLASSROOM. NOTHING. IT’S ALL BUREAUCRATIC. ADDING TESTS WHILE TAKING TESTS THE WAY. Reporter: IN ADDITION TO BROAD SUPPORT, THE REFORM PLAN HAS APPROVAL FROM THE STATE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. THAT BILL AHEAD TO THE SENATE AND GO THROUGH THE SAME PROCESS. AND THAT WILL BE VETTED IN A COMMITTEE BEFORE ITS FINAL APPROVAL.
