So, What Is a Universal Basic Income? – The Jim Jefferies Show

THERE ARE ROUGHLY 40 MILLION
AMERICANS LIVING IN POVERTY. THANKS TO DONALD TRUMP, THAT’S
ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE. THE ADMINISTRATION IS
CONSIDERING CHANGING THE DEFINITION OF POVERTY SO FEWER
FAMILIES WILL QUALIFY FOR GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. SO PROBLEM SOLVED. I GUESS THAT’S ONE WAY TO DEAL
WITH POVERTY, JUST SAY IT’S NOT POVERTY. THAT’S LIKE, IF YOU HAD STAGE
CANCER AND THE DOCTOR SAID NO, THAT’S JUST A PANCREAS BRUISE,
PUT SOME ICE ON IT. IT’S A PRETTY SIMPLE IDEA.>>THE PROBLEM WITH POVERTY IS
NOT HAVING ENOUGH MONEY. THE SIMPLE SOLUTION WHEN SOMEONE
DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY IS TO GIVE THEM MONEY. SO THAT’S MORE OR
UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME.>>IT’S A MONTHLY INCOME. YOU’RE A POOR BASTARD, YOU GET
SOME MONEY. A RICH [ BLEEP ] MONEY. A BUDDHIST MONK SUCK A [ BLEEP ]
HERE’S SOME MONEY. THE IDEA IS THAT IF PEOPLE KNOW
THEY CAN MEET THEIR MOST BASIC NEEDS IT WOULD REDUCE INCOME
INEQUALITY AND GIVE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO PEOPLE WHO FEEL
TRAPPED BY POVERTY.>>PEOPLE MAY BECOME MORE
ENTREPRENEURIAL AND TAKE MORE RISKS. THEY MAY CHOOSE TO SPEND MORE
TIME WITH THEIR FAMILIES OR TAKE CARE OF THEIR ELDERLY RELATIVES
OR VOLUNTEER IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.>>OR GET THE HEROIN OR INVEST
IN BITCOIN OR GO CRAZY AND BUY THOSE GIANT TOBLERONES AT THE
DUTY FREE STORE. YOU DON’T NEED FOUR. JUST GET ONE. SEE, NOT EVERYONE SPENDS
RESPONSIBLY. [ APPLAUSE ]
>>ANDREW YANG HAS MADE UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME THE
CORNERSTONE OF HIS CAMPAIGN. HE PROMISED $1,000 A MONTH TO
ALL AMERICANS OVER 18. HE’S ALREADY STARTED WITH ONE
MARRIED COUPLE.>>CHUCK AND JODEY FOSSEY ARE
THE FIRST TO TRY OUT HIS UNIVERSAL BASE INCOME. HE GAVE THEM $1,000 A MONTH OUT
OF HIS OWN POCKET.>>DO YOU FEEL LIKE ANDREW YANG
HAS EARNED YOUR VOTE?>>I FEEL LIKE, YEAH, I PROBABLY
WILL VOTE FOR HIM.>>PROBABLY? PROBABLY? 1,000 BUCKS A MONTH AND HE’S
STILL JUST A PROBABLY? HELL, I’D PROBABLY VOTE FOR
WHICHEVER CANDIDATE LET ME USE THEIR HBO GO PASSWORD. SO THE BALL’S IN YOUR COURT JOE
BIDEN AND BERNIE SANDERS AND ALL THOSE OTHERS WHOSE NAMES I’VE
FORGOTTEN. ONE OF THE MAIN ARGUMENTS FOR
BASIC INCOME, WE’RE ALL GOING TO NEED IT WHEN THE MACHINES TAKE
OVER.>>LATELY, TECH TITANS IN
SILICON VALLEY ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST ADVOCATES OF THE IDEA.>>THEY ARGUE A UNIVERSAL BASIC
INCOME COULD PROVIDE A CUSHION TO AN ESTIMATED MILLIONS OF
PEOPLE WHO COULD LOSE THEIR JOBS IF THEY’RE REPLACED BY
AUTOMATION OR ROBOTS.>>AND YOU CAN TRUST THOSE GUYS. BECAUSE THINK ABOUT IT, NO HUMAN
IS CALLED ELON. OR MARK ZUCKERBORG. IT’S RIGHT IN THE NAME. YOU’RE NOT FOOLING ME, ROBOT
CEO’S. [ APPLAUSE ]
>>THERE’S A LOT TO LIKE ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF UNIVERSAL BASIC
INCOME, BUT WE NEED MORE RESEARCH BEFORE WE KNOW IF IT
WILL WORK ON A LARGER INDEFINITE SCALE. UNLESS SOMEONE BUILDS A TIME
MACHINE, THERE’S NO WAY OF KNOWING HOW AUTOMATION WILL —
WHOA! WHAT’S HAPPENING? WHO ARE YOU? I AM YOU, JIM JEFFRIES, BUT FROM
THE FUTURE. I AM US, AND YOU ARE WE. AND I’VE COME TO WARN YOU ABOUT
THE FUTURE, THE ROBOTS TAKE OVER EVERYTHING. OH, NO, ARE ZYBORGS KILLING
EVERYONE? NO, NO, THEY JUST TAKE OUR
JOBS, WE ALL SIT AROUND COLLECTING TWO GRAND FROM THE
GOVERNMENT EACH MONTH. IT’S AWESOME. SO UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME REALLY
WORKS? YEAH, YEAH, EVERYONE TOOK THEIR
MONEY AND SPENT IT RESPONSIBLY, LIKE WE KNEW THEY WOULD, THERE’S
NO MORE POVERTY, NO MORE HUNGER, NO MORE WAR, OUR WORLD’S
PROBLEMS ARE BEING SOLVED. HOTEL WIFI STILL SUCKS. THERE’S SOMETHING I WANTED TO
TELL YOU. MAKE SURE TO USE A CONDOM MARCH
14th, 2019. IT’S MAY. WELL, ENJOY YOUR PENIS WHILE YOU
CAN. ANYWAY, GOT TO GO, TIME FOR ME
TO GET BACK TO THE FUTURE. NOVEMBER 2019
[ LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE ]>>WOW! I’M GOING TO LIVE THROUGH THE
SUMMER.

I love how leftist scum push their stupid narratives and then pretend it's a joke…
The infinite stupidity of universal basic income is revealed in it's lack of reality…
We have enough lazy slugs bilking the welfare system. What kind of an idiot would want more???
The people making the money will never work! The only people that are for this, are lazy lying scum, communists, and rich elitist leftists who think they can convince the poor people if they vote for them they will get free shit from the evil rich people… Giving people free money to live is no incentive at all. They will in no way benefit our country or themselves…

Being poor and having bills that just keep piling up can be a very depressing thing. There are alot of people who actually commit suicide due to the depression and the stresses of barely scraping by. My father being 1 of them. I think a system like the 1 you're discussing, could really help alot of people. The kind who just need that little extra bit of help to get back on their feet. Also it would help to relieve the stress and depression that usually comes along with being poor. Not to mention the boost it could have on the economy.

  • 1upTriforce

It's drawing a picture of Muhammad to trick a guest into making a random comment that you could edit out of context, and put on your show. Wait, was that universal basic income, or was I thinking of something else?

  • John Smith

UBI is what happens when we give away all of our power in exchange for crumbs. Do really think the powers that be would care if a bunch of unemployed people demand something? What are you going to do? strike? Go pound pavement, losers.

Also jim Jefferies is a somewhat humorous gatekeeper making sure that you dont want things to be better. Trust someone like that at your own risk

  • n3Cr0ManCeD

Republicans hate this idea, despite the fact that heavily Republican Alaska already has a program like this that was signed into law by a Republican Governor. (Jay Hammond)

Just like they hate the Affordable Care Act, despite the fact that is was modeled after the Massachusetts plan conceived of by a Republican think-tank and signed into law by Republican Mitt Romney. (And Democrats hated it then)

Want people to judge a plan on it's merits and flaws? Don't tell them who proposed it. Otherwise they will judge it based on party affiliation. BOTH sides are guilty of this. Don't bother posting replies stating YOUR side doesn't, the other side does. That's bullshit and there are enough "I know you are but what am I" comments on Youtube.

Let's get the $1000 per month and let the people bring the economy to equilibrium. Maybe $3000 in the future….

1 Be a terrible person and manipulate video.
2 Ignore the people and pretend that nothing happens.
    3 Wait till people forget.
    4 Repeat

  • Cat Tac

Aye it's the fraud that screws guests with editing lies & false promises/deals. All while misrepresenting the truth & pretending to have grown as a person when actually he just watches his mouth in front of the cameras.

  • CockatooDude

It's great to see at least some mainstream media viewing a UBI in a positive light. Also Yang 2020, need we say more?

  • Austin

The problem is that automation is already happening and it's a big reason Trump was elected. Towns that were decimated by automation helped swing multiple states. We're near all time lows for worker participation, disability claims are up, and life expectancy has gone down 3 years in a row.

And for those that say they create more jobs than they replace, that is a bit oversimplified. What it does is drives the costs of goods down, increasing spending, and more people move into the service industry. You can see shifts from agriculture to manufacturing, and from manufacturing to service.

So the question is, what happens as the tech becomes cheap enough to replace services?

I'm reading Utopia for Realists: How We Can Build the Ideal World by Rutger Bregman and the data actually shows that most people do NOT misspend when they have a minimum income. And they actually have all the security to not do stupid things..

that said people who don't have an income do stupid things too, like sell drugs

The bourgeoisie have changed what it means to be poor in the past before to make it look like poverty was not increasing. https://youtu.be/A6VqV1T4uYs

    or you know… try socialism?

and before the obvious trolls start to say "but in that socialist dictarship things were bad", yes every dictatorship is bad. do i have to mention all the capitalist dictatorships? you wouldnt like that. there is the democratic socialism system that prevents something like this from happening.
you can read more on that before seeing things through your 60s red scare propaganda. read some Marx. read on the newer socialist philosophers.
capitalism is by its nature going to exploit the work of those without the means of production for the profit of the 1%. even if they give you a bit more breadcrumbs you are never paid for what your workhours are actually worth.

  • Energizer Erica

A lot of people here keep on saying that poverty is the biggest factor in crimes, mental illnesses, etc.

We were very poor. No one in my clan resorted to theft, illegal drugs and other crimes.

When a crime is committed, it’s a choice.

If you’re already poor, don’t suddenly decide to start a family and create even more mouths that you can’t afford to feed.

Don’t drink and smoke, since those things are unnecessary expenses. Cook at home rather than eat out.

Why should other people be responsible for your finances?

Poor people keep on blaming the wealthy, when the wealthy were in fact once as poor or even poorer than the poor complainers of today.

If you think you’re poor now, start analyzing your finances, and start saving where you can.

And quite frankly, you don’t have to go to university to succeed. There are so many online classes that are far cheaper, and by studying on your own, you get to spare yourself from owing massive student loans.

Why would anyone be happy about their wealth getting taxed? When the wealthy were poor, did they do GoFundMe’s??? No, they sacrificed and worked.

These days, people are all about dramatizing their situations to get donations all over the world. We are all suffering. No one’s special.

I don't know, I don't want rich people to get for doing nothing. They don't even have to clean or do their own laundry.

  • Brian Smith

My only problem with UBI is the government will never force corporations to pay their taxes. That money will come from the people who still work in non automated jobs. Which would wind up putting them in poverty. I'd say change the damn tax code to make Jeff besos, Zuckerberg, Amazon, netflix, and God knows who else. To pay their damn taxes, why do I (just barely over poverty) pay more in taxes than the richest man in the world? Shits fucked.

  • Steve Smith

The idea of people spending their money "responsibly" isn't relevant. It's a matter of putting that money back into the economy to stabilize the economy. It isn't some sort of personality test. You give a person $1000 and they buy a TV (or crack) AND the oil change they desperately need. There are now two businesses that made profit of that. Not rocket science. Now there's the right wing talking point (and let's face it corporate Dems are on this message as well) that it will make people "lazy" and "unproductive". There are a few places experimenting with UBI, one of them is right here in America. Alaska and they haven't experienced any drop in productivity and lets be honest what exactly does any of the pundits on FOX, CNN or MSNBC really produce? Bullshit and they get paid millions.

  • Brent Stack

Once you see ppl spend food stamps on ridiculous shit, you understand how stupid this is. 2 weeks ago I watched a guy spend $70 on junk food and candy at a gas station. Free money is money burned!

  • nadun lochana

1000 USD a month is almost 9 times what I earn doing a full time job in Sri Lanka lol and its still a 'ill probably vote for him"!?

"So, when will Jim Jefferies apologize to Avi Yemini for doctoring his interview video?" – The Jim "Piece of Shit" Jefferies Show

  • William Perry

Jim, love your show, but I have some suggestions. First, you need better writers. Second, you need to drink more liquor before you go on. Third, boobs.

  • AllieCat

I hate to be a bitch (no I don't), but I cannot get over the fact that Andrew Yang looks like Shortround all grown up. And that "Math" hat is REALLY not helping. 🙄😂😝 #okiedokiedrjones

  • Mike B

200 million adults, so $1000 a month is $200 billion a month, or 2.4 trillion a year or basically 2/3rds of the revenue (taxes) the US brings in every year… yeah Universal Income will totally work!

And lets not forget all the people complaining about immigrants taking their jobs (whether legal or not), now they'll come just for the free check! 😀

  • Thomas Stecyk

Does the US give away money to countries that can not take care of their people. I the we build things for other countries, protect other countries, we do more for other countries than any other countries on earth. Do we need to take something back? Until we do away with poverty and homelessness in the US, I think so.

  • Jason Lefler

If the jobs are gone then so are the dollars for all the products the machines that have eliminated our jobs are meant to make.
UBI is the alternative to letting people starve.

  • Bubba Tao

Probably something like a housing credit of 1k/m or and/or free food and clothes would be better. Only ugly houses, ugly clothes and boring food would qualify, keeping the rich from using it or selling it.

  • mike askme

I love the ideal of a UBI, but i think we would need to stabilize housing first, then we would need to get our military spending in check, and next we would need to get on board with mass transit, because a UBI will only mean rising prices. Yeah i know it sounds counter productive, but if people really think about it, what is the biggest portion of your monthly expenditures? For me its housing, and next its medical and third its food, i dont by name brand clothing in fact i buy my clothing for second hand stores, i dont drink and once a month i do i will admit by a bag of weed, but only after those three things are taken care. Sometimes i forgo my monthly weed purchase because food prices go up and i refuse to beg, but a UBI would put more money in circulation because people would be able to afford none necessities and could afford to go to a movie, take a weekend trip, or a yearly trip. Just my little two cents, sorry for the weed comment.

  • Religion LOL

All these lazy fucks with no trades or skills wanting free money lol. Robots are taking over because people don't want to work. WORK FOR IT OR BE POOR!

  • Asbjørn Skov

I think its a shame that they don't mention the Keynesian multiplier, which obviously is much more important regarding poor people than rich

  • isaac anthony

Or bankrupt the economy by betting on sub prime mortgages! See how republicans bitch about people on welfare all day long, but Wallstreet corporations have taken more tax money than any poor person EVER will. Fuck you greedy cunts!

  • Shrek

Keynes once predicted that in the future, people would only have to work 15 hours a week due to society becoming wealthier. That hasn't happened yet because capitalists are good at screwing other people over for profit. But if they do not want to end up on the guillotine, they would do well to leave some bones behind for everybody else when they're done with the meat. Universal basic income is a must.

  • Israel De Los Reyes

Universal basic income is genius for people of a capitalist economy. It's great for the economy and as a counter for technological job losses. For now we need a better outlook then coal.
