Speech-Language Pathology: The Importance Of Intervention | Cincinnati Children’s

[Elizabeth Alexander, Speech Pathologist] Welcome to speech language pathology. Today we will talk about speech and language therapy with babies and toddlers. First, let’s talk about the difference between the word “speech” and the word “language.” Speech is the physical production of individual sounds such as “P,” “B,” “F,” and “S.” We combine speech sounds to form words and sentences. This is important if the child is not producing sounds as expected for his or her age. It is also important if the child…

Fetal intervention for HLHS with a restrictive atrial septal defect (ASD)

(soft music) – So with babies that have hypoplastic left heart syndrome, all the blood that’s returning from the lungs comes back to the left side of the heart, but it can’t get through the left side that’s too small. It’s very important that babies have a large connection between the two upper chambers of the heart. So in this diagram, what I’m talking about is the hole here between the upper two chambers that all babies normally have and is very important that babies with hypoplastic left heart syndrome have. Language Acquisition and Universal Grammar

So let’s talk about babies. Very cute, right? It’s hard to look at a baby smiling at you and not feel good. Or discrimination against people who are disabled; they call that ability-ism. Discrimination against people who don’t hear; we call that audism. That’s everywhere. And again, when you become friends with a person, or you work together with them, then the resistance decreases. Deaf babies are born with all of the capabilities, the potential in life, if they have full access to information, communication, family language, especially language. The United Nations has a convention on human rights, for people with disabilities. And it includes the right to sign…

Bill Nye: Can We Stop Telling Women What to Do With Their Bodies?

Many, many, many, many more hundreds of eggs are fertilized than become humans. Eggs get fertilized and by that I mean sperm get accepted by ova a lot. But that’s not all you need. You have to attach to the uterine wall, the inside of a womb, a woman’s womb. But if you’re going to hold that as a standard, that is to say if you’re going to say when an egg is fertilized it’s therefore has the same rights as an individual, then whom are you going to sue? Whom are you going to imprison? Every woman who’s had a fertilized egg pass through her? Every guy who’s sperm…
