Supreme Court Roundup: October Term 2018 [SCOTUSbrief]

This was an interesting term. Not as many blockbusters, necessarily, as-as in past years, but plenty to chew on, and there are individual videos about the-the biggest cases. I want to talk about three others that might get overlooked. Knick was the biggest property rights case of the term, probably the biggest property rights case in some time. Even though it was a procedural case, that is, it was about whether you have to first go to state court to bring your claim that the local government has taken your property in violation of the Fifth Amendment, or whether you can go straight to federal court. I think that the title that we put on the lecture is “How to Bring America Together”, right, and one of the points I’m gonna make is that we all can be part of the experience and the project of bringing America back together again, and it doesn’t matter if you’re on the left or the right. I wanna talk about some principles that transcend your particular political views and indeed should make us want to come together, especially because we don’t agree. Crazy idea, right? It sounds sort of idealistic, but…

Allegheny County exec pledges to veto ‘In God We Trust’ bill

INDEPENDENCE. IT’S ALL WRAPPED UP IN PATRIOTISM. SHE’S TALKING ABOUT FOUR SIMPLE WORDS TONIGHT ADOPTED AS OUR NATIONAL MOTTO AND FOUND ON OUR COINS AND BILLS. . . BUT ONE OFFICIAL SAYS “IN GOD WE TRUST” DOES NOT BELONG ON THE WALL OF OUR COURTHOUSE. I’M MIKE CLARK. AND I’M WENDY BELL. IT’S PATRIOTISM VERSUS RELIGION. THEY WON’T GIVE UP THE FIGHT. Reporter: THIS IS THE GOLD ROOM AT THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY COURTHOUSE. THISL S THEIR MEETING. THIS IS WHERE “IN GOD WE TRUST” WOULD BE DISPLAYED ABOVE A REPLICA OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS. JUST THE TALK OF IT HAS CREATED CONTROVERSY. I THINK WHEN YOU PUT THOSE KIND…
