    2019 Florida K-12 legislative roundup

the 2019 Florida legislative session came to an end yesterday and only a day overtime which is remarkable considering the level of dysfunction or deeply compromised Tallahassee politicians tell blatant lies during debate for example Hialeah garden senator Manny Diaz jr. after unsuccessfully trying for days to retro actively change referendum language overwhelmingly approved by his own district claimed miami-dade County Public Schools had deceived the public into approving a referendum to raise public school teacher salaries the truth is that the MDC PS superintendent took a town hall tour of the whole district consistently making the case for why the school board would not be sharing any of the…

New York Times Co. v. Sullivan Summary | quimbee.com

    – [Narrator] Freedom of speech has its limits. Those limits were tested in New York Times Company versus Sullivan. In 1960, a civil rights organization took out a full page advertisement in the New York Times. The advertisement detailed a “wave of terror” perpetrated by civil rights opponents. Amongst other horrors, the advertisement accused the Alabama police department of terrorizing student protesters. In particular the advertisement claimed police had padlocked the students’ dining hall “in an attempt to starve them into submission”. The problem was that the advertisement contained a number of factual inaccuracies. The Alabama police never padlocked the student dining hall and several other statements in the advertisement…

Public hearing held on where confederate statue will be moved

GOOD AFTERNOON. I AM COLIN MAYFIELD. AT LEAST ONE SUPPORTER OF A CONTROVERSIAL CONFEDERATE MONUMENT IS VOWING TO KEEP FIGHTING ITS RELOCATION. THE MONUMENT’S NEW HOME WAS THE TOPIC OF A PUBLIC HEARING THIS MORNING. WLKY’S MARK VANDERHOFF IS DOWNTOWN, JUST OUTSIDE OF WHERE THE HEARING IS BEING HELD. MARK, I THOUGHT THIS MATTER WAS SETTLED IN COURT? MARK WELL, ACCORDING TO THE : JEFFERSON COUNTY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE, IT HAS BEEN. THIS MORNING’S HEARING WAS ALL ABOUT WHERE TO MOVE THE MONUMENT, AND IT BROUGHT OUT A LOT OF EMOTION FOR AND AGAINST THE MONUMENT. LOUISVILLE MAYOR GREG FISCHER ANNOUNCED IN APRIL THE CITY WAS MOVING THE CONFEDERATE MONUMENT. ON…

Robert Reich: What is Universal Basic Income?

You see this little gadget? Let’s call it an “iEverything.” You can’t get it yet, but if technology keeps moving as fast as it is now, the iEverything will be with us before you know it; a combination of intelligent computing, 3D manufacturing, big data crunching, and advanced biotechnology. This little machine will be able to do everything you want and give you everything you need. There’s only one hitch. As the economy is now organized, no one will be able to buy it because there won’t be any paying jobs left. You see, the iEverything will do… everything. I’m exaggerating a bit in order to make a point about…

    Happy Constitution Day

Speaker 1: Did you have any idea that September 17th was Constitution Day? Speaker 2: That I did not know, no. Speaker 3: I had no idea that Constitution Day existed. Speaker 4: I could be funny and say Hallmark hasn’t discovered it yet. Speaker 1: Why do you think most people don’t know about Constitution Day? Speaker 3: Probably because most people don’t actually know the contents of the Constitution to know that there is actually a day celebrating. Speaker 5: Well I have a friend actually on July 4th that reads a Declaration of Independence to his family everyday … every July 4th. I think for Constitution Day,…

Arthur C. Brooks – Bringing America Together

    – What do we do about this deep political polarization problem? That’s what I wanna talk about today. I think that the title that we put on the lecture is “How to Bring America Together”, right, and one of the points I’m gonna make is that we all can be part of the experience and the project of bringing America back together again, and it doesn’t matter if you’re on the left or the right. I wanna talk about some principles that transcend your particular political views and indeed should make us want to come together, especially because we don’t agree. Crazy idea, right? It sounds sort of idealistic, but…

It Depends What State You’re In: Policies and Politics of the US Health Care System | Part 2

    – Welcome back, everybody. I hope you had as interesting a conversation in your break as I did at mine. And we brought up a bunch of problems in the first half. And it’s up to this panel to bring us all the solutions. My name is Janet Rich-Edwards. I’m the Life Sciences Director here at Radcliffe. And it’s my pleasure to introduce Zirui Song, who’s going to be our moderator. Zirui is an Assistant Professor of Healthcare Policy at Harvard Medical School, and also an internal medicine physician at MGH. He has worked in the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Center for Social and Economic Dynamics…
