US Coast Guard vs Navy – What’s the ACTUAL Difference? (Military Comparison)

The United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard, for anyone not in the know they might be curious as to what the real difference is between the two services. After all, they both pretty much just operate out at sea, and they both use military-caliber vessels. So what’s the real difference between the two, and why do we even need a coast guard? Why doesn’t the Navy just do both jobs itself? In 1790 the United States was facing a dire naval situation. Its shores were being regularly ravaged by pirate vessels, many of which were sponsored by Britain. In an attempt to protect its increasingly important overseas…

Sailing into History – Sailors of USS Constitution Part 1

When I give tours on board Constitution, people want to hear a story. People want to hear the history. People want to hear why she is still around and where she came from to begin with. I feel like it’s the foundation of the Navy. This is where the Navy started. When I first joined the Navy, I told the recruiter I wanted to be a history teacher. He said, “History? Okay, Boatswain’s Mate is the right job for you.” During the War of 1812, a Boatswain’s Mate’s job would have been sanding the deck to get the deck perfectly smooth so the guns don’t chaff against the deck and…

    USS Constitution’s Keel

well that’s not something I do every day, I’ve just walked under the keel of USS Constitution. The keel of this ship, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world, is 220 years old. You might be able to detect, as you can see over my shoulder, there’s a slight curvature to the keel of this vessel, about a six-inch curvature known as a hog in the keel. It’s not something that one needs to be greatly concerned over but given the age of the keel, and the excessive weight that the ship carries at different times that keel is going to have a slight bend or curve to it.…

“The Last Ride” USS CONSTITUTION 217th Birthday Celebration

USS Constitution is a 44 gun frigate. 3 masted square rigged frigate. Built to out run, or out gun any thing she came across. Which she was successful at doing 33 and O in battle. It’s the last underway the ship will have for over 3 years. She truly is a lens through which we can examine the importance of having a Navy. The role our Navy has had in our nations history. This ship was built as a result of acts of piracy against our nation. That made it very clear. In order to defend our national interest and economy. We would need to have a Navy. That was true…
