Tony Albert Talks about Recognising Indigenous Australians in the Constitution

I think about the kind of country I want to live in and that is one which Aboriginal people are included in the Constitution. In 2012 I was asked by the Australian War Memorial to be an official war artist. The memorial for me tells a very personal story, a heroic story, of my grandfather. So my grandfather Eddie Albert escaped a prisoner of war camp with six other Australians and three of the men were actually shot – the four upstanding bullets being the survivors and the three fallen shells of those who lost their life. It devastated him returning home and not receiving any recognition. Our duty as the younger generation is to keep their stories alive. The Recognise campaign is an opportunity for us to move forward as a nation.
