What Happens If a Loved One Says No to an Addiction Intervention?

What if you don’t try? If a family, families always
ask us what if they say no and my response immediately
is what if you don’t try? And the fact is, they’re
probably going to say no because most addicts and
alcoholics we intervene on have become accustomed to a lifestyle you’ve given them and
they’re almost entitled at the point of the intervention. It’s almost natural for them to say no. It’s very rarely do you do an intervention where people are happy that
we’re there and they’re thankful and they act as if it’s a birthday party. They’re upset, they’re mad,
and their anger is fear. We’re threatening their solution. We’re threatening their lifestyle. We’re threatening all they know. And all of the sudden,
there’s all these people that they have individually
manipulated in the same room, on the same page, and they’re scared. So they’re going to say no. They almost always do. And they usually change to
yes within an hour or so. It doesn’t take much convincing
for them to turn around.
